Who likes the 3" Model 10's, 13's, 64's and 65's?

I had a 65 3" and I loved the way it handled but hated shooting 357 out of it, so I got rid of it and replaced it with a 64 3". It has an interesting history--an LEO friend's friend had it stolen from him six years ago. He replaced it with an automatic, but then the sheriff's office found it and returned it last year.

As he had outgrown his need for the revolver and had no love for it, I traded him a DPMS I had had for a few years (my first AR since replaced with builds). I think he thinks he got the better deal, but ARs are like fleas on a dog, while they don't make many 3" S&Ws.

I feel obligated to ask you, wouldn't it have been cheaper to just shoot .38's out of the 65??
Just saying........:D

Eddie, I used to have a 3" 66. How common are those? I got mine in mid eighties, dealer said it was a treasury department overrun.

The 3" J frame didn't make it with me and sold it last year.
Now the 3" M10-5 is a horse of a different color. :)

My experience was exact opposite. I had a 3" model 60 and loved it. Let that go and replaced it with a 3" 66. Much prefer the 4" K frame and 3" J frame to the 3" K. Different strokes I guess

Normally I carry a 4" Colt Python or S&W 686 but when I need to carry a smaller revolver my go to is a 3" S&W 65-3. Great little revolver and the perfect size for concealed carry while offering appropriate capabilities for defensive shooting.

I have a 65 worked over and sold as a Smith "Custom Shop" revolver. Best DA trigger I've felt, bobbed hammer and tight fittings.

I'm obliged to answer in this fashion: you don't know how much I paid for the 65, nor how much I sold it for, nor how much I paid for the DPMS. Those numbers would tell you the answer to your question.

THIS must say I have been looking to get a 3 inch k frame for a carry gun for a while but it seems everytime I find one cash is short ,I am hoping against hope that mtruck don't break down, that roof don't start leaking ,dog don't get sick, wife dont find out about girlfriend ,girlfriend don't get pregnant if all goes smooth about last of march first of April lol I'm just kidding I ain't got no dog .

Yes the 3" M65 rb is a great carry. Us grey hairs love them. The younger guys like the compact 9mm bottom feeders

IIRC per letters; there were approximately 5000-5500 3" 66s ( -2,-3 and-4s) built.

I have 2 -3s from the late 80s;dealers almost couldn't give them away. The first batch of -2s around 1985 were for Lue Horton......never heard or read about the Treasury overrun.

Well, I bought one at last week's gun show.
Mint condition.
However, the factory grips just do not fit my hand comfortably.
If I keep it, I will have to change the grips.
I really like the heft and feel of it though.

I like any revolver with a 3" barrel.

I think a 3" barreled medium frame 357mag is about the best combat revolver one can have.

Sadly, that wasn't common thought when they were originally being made, as most were 2.5". So now the 3" versions that enthusiasts and conceal carriers would love to have are now priced at "collector" values and don't make sense for utility use anymore.

Thanks everyone.

I'm really liking this Model 65-5 I recently acquired. The sights aren't great, but the gun handles fast and balances just about perfectly. Anybody else like the 3" fixed sight K-frames?

My 65-5:

Swapped the grips onto my M66 2.5" and put on a pair of Pachmayr's:

The longer Pachmayr grip makes the gun sit better in my hand, and really locks it in during double action fire. My favorite K-frame round butt grips.

What kind of wood grips are those?

Can't be too many folks here that don't like 3 inch K frames.
I have one that is just about perfect.

There seems to be a lot of people(including me)that prefer the 3'' and 5'' S&W to the 4 and 6''.
Anybody at S&W has some numbers of how many they'd sell? What about making a few special runs of each?
I won't hold my breath until it comes to be...my lips'll probably turn blue before!
