I've seen questions asked on this forum about How do you carry?, What do you carry? When do you carry? but Why do you carry?
I started carrying, in Illinois, just within the last year only because it was not allowed before then. I carry because of what I see as an increase of street crime through out the area and a rise in home invasions.
Some of you may carry because of the areas you travel in or because you are in unlighted parking lots at a late hour, or you or someone you know had a bad experience ,or you are a LEO who sees more that the rest of us and knows it's a good idea. I have been advised by LEOs that I should.

I carry homeowners insurance but I don't want my house to burn down. I carry car insurance but I don't look forward to accidents. I carry a defensive sidearm but I don't want to be in a gun fight.

Some things are just better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

Response time for a 911 call? National average around 25 to 45 minutes.

Response time of the 1911? About 900 feet per second.

Unlike politicians and celebrities, I cannot afford a personal protection detail or bodyguards.

I carry a gun because a cop is just too heavy.

I could go on and on. The point is that we live in a dangerous world and having the means to defend yourself is nothing more than enlightened self-interest.

Because you never know when I might need it.

That's why I also have a fire extinguisher in my vehicles, jumper cables, a first aid kit, small air compressor, and other things. I've never needed to use any of them but it's better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

I carry ALL THE TIME, even while in my house.

Presently I just checked into a motel in an apparently shady part of an unnamed city, but I can defend myself if necessary because I'm armed.

I'll be walking a couple of blocks soon to get something to eat at Denny's. I also carry a small flashlight.

Short answer: In case of an emergency that requires it. I retired last year, after 25 years in LE. From my experience, there are simply too many psychos, criminals, and pervs our there to go around unarmed. Have I ever had to use my personal carry? No, but that doesn't mean there won't come a time when I run into one of the aforementioned dirtbags who wants to victimize me or my loved ones.

I also carry a fire extinguisher in my truck. Last week, some old wiring in a friend's hay storage shed shorted out and started a fire in the eaves. I was able to put out the fire, and prevent loss of hay and equipment because I was prepared. A gun, like a fire extinguisher, is simply a tool that has its uses. When you need it, you want it close at hand.

I carry in retirement based on 30 yrs. of street time as an LEO. There is no way to predict the future, but since I also carry all sorts of insurance this seems like a good idea.

The jumper cables got me. I was at a Sonic drive in and my battery died. I am a white guy & the only people that offered to help was 5 different black women & all had jumper cables. We get along good in my area. All automobiles should have jumper cables.:D
