I read the weekly "crime" reports that my suburban police department puts out. It light of those facts, it would be paranoid silliness to conceal carry here. If going into "the city", then concealed carry makes more sense.

Why do you have to have a ccw to carry gun? What does that prevent?

Because I'm cheap and after the almost $200 I spent to be able to exercise a right that is provided in the 2nd amendment I'm getting my money's worth!

Just out of curiosity being from Colorado would your CC carry license make it legal in Calif. I thought Calif. had some of the toughest CC carry requirements. Just asking if you were just using that state as a reference.

California doesn't recognize CC licenses for private citizens from any other state.
I don't know about special considerations for current and retired LEOs.
Well, as I surmised, the issue of insurance was discussed. Fire extinguishers fit into that context, too.
To put some of y'all's thoughts together, because I love this line:

A friend of mine at his parents' 50th anniversary party in a high rise, high dollar condominium, asked me if I was carrying a gun. I looked at him like he was crazy and retorted, "When did you ever see me when I wasn't carrying a gun?!" He replied, "Why do you need it here?"
I laughed and said, "I don't need it here; I need it out there, to get here, and to ensure I can get home safely", and I pointed to the city outside the window in a general way.
I don't think he quite understood............

I get a kick out of folks who ask why I need a firearm of any kind for any reason. I just tell em there's a thing called the Bill of Rights, it's not called the Bill of Needs. Most don't get it at first.

I may never need my sidearm again. But if I do I will really, really need it, and it needs to be there when I need it, not locked up somewhere else.
I don't need homeowners insurance unless my house burns down. I don't need car insurance unless I am involved in a traffic collision. I don't need toilet paper unless I have to use the restroom.
Some things are better to have and never need than to need and not have.
That is why I always have toilet paper readily available.

My favorite answer to this question is to quote the Texas Ranger. When at a "society" party, a very proper lady said, "Ranger, I see you are wearing your pistol - are you expecting trouble?" The Ranger replied, "no ma'am, if I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle."

Well, I'd make the analogy that people never leave home without their cell phone in case an emergency happens and they need to dial 9-1-1. I conceal carry so I don't have to worry about dialing until after an emergency happens.
What's even crazier is people spend $350+ on a smart phone that will last them maybe 2 years but complain that guns cost too much. It's about priorities.

Personally, I have little interest in becoming overly (or sometimes even at all) involved in "justification" type discussions with both non-gun owners and gun-owners.
I'll sometimes take a moment to discuss sincere questions, but not those seemingly driven by personal/political/moral/ethical agendas, or from someone who simply wants to argue about something and is looking to start the argument in order to do it.
You know, the genuinely serious cops asking questions about off-duty weapons, or private citizens asking about carrying a concealable firearm with a CCW license, or maybe just safely keeping a firearm at home. Folks actually looking for information instead of a debate topic, or some way to further some particular personal "cause".
It can quickly become tiresome when someone apparently seems to think I somehow "need" to justify my choices to them ... meaning BOTH anti-gun & pro-gun proponents ... simply because my own thoughts, experiences and decisions apparently differ from those of someone else.
