Why isn't there a S&W defensive shotgun?

I own a number of Smith & Wesson revolvers, pistol, ARs... why don't they make a riot/home defense shotgun? I sure would like one.

No, the model 1000, 1000P, and 3000 were all good guns, very good shotguns.

I agree about the 916, I don't need one of those.

I'm surprised they haven't made an M&P shotgun. They would definitely take some of the market with it.

RECIPE FOR RIOT SHOTGUN

--- One (1) plain shotgun barrel
--- One (1) pipe cutter
--- One (1) fine rat tail file (size optional)
--- One (1) small piece of fine emery cloth

Slice barrel to desired length and blend other ingredients until smooth. Attach barrel to shotgun of choice. Add frosting (Sight, swivels, sling, etc.) to taste.

No baking required. You may store at room temp.

I thought about it....

S&W has been really concentrating on mostly handguns and rifles. They probably figure that there is already too much competition in the defensive shotgun world so it wouldn't be a moneymaker.

I keep my old one next to the nightstand, loaded with one in the chamber.
Model 1000,pump,with one slide, not a double bar.
A great one that I retired with.
It has never failed me, and stands silently awaiting an intruder.

IIRC, the old S&W shotguns were made in Japan, right?
Didn't S&W ever made shotguns in America?

I'd love to own a S&W shotgun myself (out of brand loyalty only).

Reality is that the Mossbergs, Remingtons, Winchesters and Ithacas really got you covered for pretty much anything one might need.

They aren't making shotguns for the same reason Mossberg isn't making handguns. Not enough market. Police are ditching shotguns in favor of rifles and there really isn't a big market for civilian home defense shotguns. I own two 870s that were police trades. I paid $300 total for both and I probably shouldn't have bought the second one for the amount of times I shoot them

IL state police issued S&W 3000 (made in Japan) pump shotguns in the 1980s. They were prone to rusting & were not as good as the Ithaca Model 37 that they replaced. ISP also issued Winchester Model '97s, Model 12s & 1200s prior to issuing the S&W 3000s...

No market for defensive shotguns? From observation in my area, that's about all that seems to be moving in any significant amount. And if the long-barreled fowlers sell, it is usually the old beaters bought with the intent of chopping them for resale at a tidy profit.

Another $.02 out of my pocket.

Nothing like that around here. I bet everyone owns one but you never see them at the range, never see one being purchased at a store or show. It's seems to be one of those things that everyone bought once, just in case, and that was it
