Most accurate thermometer in 1880, was only to the one tenth of a degree! And considering we’re talking about Great Britain, that was in Fahrenheit in 1880’s…
Exactly, AND they had to be read manually (potential inaccuracy), AND hand recorded (another point of potential inaccuracy), AND then there would also be the issue of legibility (some people's handwriting is almost unreadable).

So at most we have SOME records of questionable accuracy for a very short period. Sounds like a great basis for changing society's whole direction and upending everything that western civilization has accomplished.

The Parable of the Boiled Frog - it’s reported that if you put a frog in a pot of water and slowly increase the temperature until it boils, the frog being unable to detect the subtle change fails to jump out and dies.

Regarding sample size, I recall that statistical significance can be found with a sample size of 13. As for proving validity, the general rule is that someone completely independent has to reach the same conclusion as the initial researcher.

This is like “Ripleys believe it or Not.” That’s why we collect Smiths…….Happy New Year to all.

Statistical significance from 13 data points? Yeah, but which 13? And over what period vs. how far out you're extrapolating the data?

Since you like down home allegories, how about a couple of equally down home homilies?

Figures lie and liars figure

There are lies, damn lies, and statistics. :D

There is plenty of evidence that climatologists have fudged and manipulated the "data" to support their theories.

Fahrenheit gives you more gradation, so it is better.

"Most statisticians agree that the minimum sample size to get any kind of meaningful result is 100. If your population is less than 100 then you really need to survey all of them."
