Why??

Watching news tonight , anonther beat down at a gas station. Why so much violence at these places. I have seen many stories of car jackings, robberies. I am always at high alert while I am at one. Any ideas why this seemes to be a place of choice? This one on the news they beat the stuffing out this guy. Me that's not going to happen . Some one would be drinking gas

The bandits like to catch people busy doing something / letting their guard down... and they go in for a quick smack down to get your money or vehicle. May also grab a pocketbook left inside car on the seat while a female is pumping gas.

They do it because it works. Probable easy target. Often close to a main street or freeway so fairly easy and fast get away. Same reason stop-and-robs and banks next onramps get hit more often than others. Some people shut down their personal threat radar when they are preforming a routine task.

That's how carjackings work. You get a gun to your head, and they drive off with your car, your Mossberg Shockwave, and the Governor you got to save you from carjackings.

Service stations are great locations for kidnappings at night. Brightly lit, the average person pays little attention to the traffic pulling in from any or all directions. Pemex and OXXO convenience stores are both real red zones in Mexico. Some places you don't get gas alone.

Two of the scariest places I've been were gas stations. One in Memphis, on in NOLA. Hand in pocket on J frame, head on swivel, looking outward for danger.

Yeah... I stick to Sam's Club and Costco for my gas. It's a total PITA when it comes to getting in and out of those places... but there's always a lot of cars and always a lot of people getting gas.

To me it's a lot safer than a stop and rob next to the on-ramp to I-5.

Exactly! People are preoccupied with mundane distractions instead of being alert. When I stop for gas, my head is on a swivel. I try to keep an eye on everything.

Pretty sure the incident the OP was referring to was a road rage issue, and one party followed the other to the gas pump. Made the national news . . .

I gas up every Sunday during the day if I need it or not. Sometimes it will only be $8.00 or $9.00. This way I have no need to go to a gas station at night. Pay at the pump, keep my eyes open, and then move on. Same thing when I travel I don't drive at night and I don't stop at any gas station other then in the daylight. This way I can at least keep the odds in my favor.

They are close to escape routes, are certain to have cash on hand, not to mention re-sellable items such as cigarettes and booze, almost certainly a clerk who has been told not to resist, easy in, easy out; open late hours when customer traffic can be light.
They have been called "Stop And Robs" since at least the late '70s.

I usually gas up at Walmart in the day time, it's the cheapest gas in town and usually crowded. I stop the car and put the keys in my pocket while out of it. I pay attention to what is going on around me and wouldn't think twice about dousing someone if attacked but I never carry matches.

I watch people all the time when out and about and am always amazed at the number of people who are totally clueless of their surrounding. They are continuously in condition "white" I see folks with their faces in the cell phone while walking or sitting, never looking up to see what is going on around them and those that have their heads down while walking across a parking lot and never even see cars as they approach. My head is continuously on a swivel when out of my home. Relaxed but aware of those around me.

Me too to the point of drowning them. 35 years in auto service seen more than one with a face. Full of gas from fuel lines and tanks not fun . Got tell you it would but someone down quick

I've got to think that being doused with gasoline would make a thug think twice about introducing any source of ignition, such as the gun in his hand.

Then again, these aren't the brightest folks around.
