Why??

I've got to think that being doused with gasoline would make a thug think twice about introducing any source of ignition, such as the gun in his hand.

Then again, these aren't the brightest folks around.

Well, they could be! Refer to my previous post.......:D

I guess in a way I'm fortunate.
Being the only non-white in an all white school taught me to watch my back 'cause an attack can happen at most any time.
I still do that out of habit. I always feel like I have to be aware of my surroundings.
I wonder sometimes if it's just an Injun thing. I am kinda hard to sneak up on.

Marshal Tom; there was a study done here in AZ about the crazy number of pedestrian vs. motor vehicle collisions. They discovered that the majority of the ped v. MV collisions were in fact the pedestrian's fault! It's due to distracted walking, texting, emails, listening to the phone & being stupidly zoned out while walking on the sidewalks, crossing major roadways etc. Who would have thought that texting and walking was hazardous to one's health?

It is and too many people are ending up like Frogger....but it's by their own doing!!

A fine tuned instinct due to centuries of predators vs. native peoples, both 4 and 2 legged?

You are correct, so many citizens are CTFO these days and distracted even walking. It's also due to the fact that civilized areas lack bears, wolves, puma's, venomous snakes etc. to keep one on their toes. But.....they have plenty of the two legged counterparts of the aforementioned. An inconvenient fact that so many American's seem to ignore....or fail to realize!

I'm in AZ also, my morning walks are in the Tonto National Forest. Recently hunters this season have left as many as 6 Elk carcasses each one getting eaten by a variety of animals and birds. I see bear scat and Coyotes scampering off tracks everywhere.

I am on high alert for surprise visits from animals protecting their food source, and carry it over into the streets. I like it.

Remember what Chief Dan George said, civilized means easy to sneak up on...

Must be a local thing. The only thing I've seen happen at gas stations is people getting gas, coffee, cigarettes and food stuff

There's a gas station I pass on the way to the gunshow. At the intersection of 2 main roads (Hwy 50 & John Young). In the almost 40 years I have lived here probably a hundred have been killed there and 5x as many violently victimized. I wouldn't stop there if'n it was the only station with gas during a shortage. They are anything from drug hot spots to young gang hang outs .. close to large highways many times so quick getaways ..

People let there guard down and are easy targets with their back to the vehicle while filling up .. women leave the car unlocked with their purse on the passenger front seat .. an easy grab !! people run in leaving the car running so car theft is also a problem ..

And shady areas of the town seem to draw the worst of them ..

Long time ago I was filling up my 1971 Mach1 at 2am when a car load of yoots pulled in behind me a started telling me they wanted my car etc etc
I told them right after they put the flames out, they didn't get it so I yanked the nozzle out of tank and pumped about a few gal on 2 of them and the beater they pulled up in then watched them scatter as I lit a smoke. Real funny now but my knees were shakin then. Gas station guy almost sht himself when I lit up my smoke.

It's still not funny . . .

Years ago I was at a gas station, a guy was filling his tank the nozzle on automatic in the filler, it clicked off when full. The guy went to the window paid his bill, then got into his car and started driving off whitout replacing the nozzle. The hose got tight and part of the nozzle broke off in the car's fill inlet, when the hose sprung back it made a racket and the driver stopped. The attendants ran out and a ruckus broke out. A bit of gas, I guess what was in the trigger mechanism, flew out but no fire.
It was a two pump station and looked like they were going to be "tied up" for a while so I went elsewhere to fill up.
