Pete Rose should have been in the HoF years back, and would have been if Giamatti hadn't been on a power trip.
Was Rose wrong to have bet on baseball? Of course he was, it was one of the rules of the Majors, BUT......... it has never been proven, or even disputed, that Pete ever once bet against the Reds. Had he been found guilty of betting/playing against his own team, then yeah, a ban would have been in order. Look at the long list of players who committed more serious offenses, and were reinstated, not only into the game, but also to the HoF eligible list.
Have you ever read Pete's apology letter to Manfred? Pete wrote it when he was 81 years old, and seemed very sincere in his apology. He took responsibility for his actions, regretted them, and damn near begged to be considered for being on the eligible list. He knew when he wrote that letter that there was no way he'd live long enough to be inducted, he simply asked to be removed from the banned list.
As has been said before....... Let he among you who hath no sin, cast the first stone. In my mind that still applies.
Regards to all,
Bob
