I recently bought a box of Winchester .40 sw without a lot number stamped on the inside flap. I thought there where certain regulations by manufactures of ammunition, that require a lot number in the event of a recall or factory mishap.

I will be calling Winchester Monday maybe they will recall all ammunition without a lot number

You might want to take a closer look at your ammo box first.
Lot numbers are not always in that location on a box.

look on the inside of both end flaps and sometimes the lot # is mechanically stamped and doesn't show up very well

I have some older 9mm white box that does not have a lot number and I have looked all over the box.

Lot numbers are not required on boxes, after all how would you prove what is in the marked box actually came in the box. Sealed cases or military ammo cans may be a different story, likely you box came out of a case with a lot number.

Im pretty sure they are required by law
I always wonder if a NIB firearm is always new.

This is the first box of ammunition that I have bought commercially that does not have a lot number. Pretty stupid on the part of Winchester because if there is a problem with your ammo there is no way to tell when it was made, what machine loaded it and recall it.

Exactly I will be calling them tomarrow

The only time I've seen boxes without a lot number is when they came out of a bigger box and the boxes inside were never intended for retail sale individually.
