I must assume that the IRS have decided after over six years that they don't like that my savings accounts bear the name of my trust rather than mine. Anybody else been subject to such nonsense? Going to call my tax guy today, but I cannot see anything in the way he did my taxes that would trigger a W-9.

Of course, it may all be down to the bank and the way they describe my accounts. Since putting my accounts in my trust they address correspondence with the name of the trust first, with my name as trustee underneath. Could be that practice has got the IRS excited. The trust name does not include my name, so that may be creating a disconnect.

Steve,

Someone with whom you have a relationship is requesting this information from you. I see it for my business tax clients who need to prepare and file certain tax documents (i.e. W-2 or 1099 NEC). However, notice in the upper right-hand corner that this form is not sent to the IRS:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf

However, I would confirm with the requestor that they have a bonifide need for your personal information.

Cheers!

Bill

Yes, the letters (there are two) have come from my bank. I'll check with them.

Checked with my bank and yes, they did send me two W-9s, but no, they're not entirely sure why.:confused::confused::( You don't want to know how long that took on the phone.

My tax guy thinks that either the bank or the IRS now require a W-9 for each account in a trust, no just one covering all of them. Guess I'll be sending these in.

Don't do it! Take a stand! Fight this nonsense no matter what the financial or personal cost!
Oh and let us know how it works out ;)
