I was getting ready to head out to run some errands when Mrs. Faulkner commented, "what's Daisy's problem this morning?"

"I don't know," I replied, "what is she doing?"

"She's sniffing around the front of my car and barking at it."

"Hmm, I'll take a look before I leave," I told her.

Sure enough, when I stepped out in the garage she was checking out the car, sniffing in the front wheel wells, sticking her head under the front bumper, and then would look up at me and yelp. Seems she had something cornered in the engine compartment.

I decided to back the car out of the garage and lift the hood for a look see. Nothing jumped out when I cranked the engine, so I backed out and shut it off then raised the hood. As I was lifting the hood I caught a glimpse of a hairless tail as whatever it was attached to scurried under the battery. Seemed too big for a mouse, maybe a rat or a small possum. Whatever it is I figured I'd just leave the car out and let it mosey out on it's own accord.

I told Mrs. Faulkner that I was leaving the car out with the hood up and I'd check it out when I got back, then I patted Daisy on the head and said, "keep an eye on it girl, I'll be back in a little while."

I was gone about an hour and a half and when I got back Mrs. Faulkner said, "well it was a rat."

"Did you see it?" I asked

"Oh yeah, Daisy caught it and killed it and proudly brought it to the back door and showed it to me."

I chuckled at that. "Good for her. Where is it now?"

"The last I saw she was playing with it out in the yard, throwing it up in the air and catching it. I think she rolled around on it too," she said. "After you left she worked hard trying to sniff out where that rat was hiding and finally she just laid down and waited for it to come out. I think that's when she caught it. It was a funny sight to watch so I took some iPhone pictures for you."

So, where's the trophy? What breed is Daisy, an Australian Rat Hound? :D

Nice wood pile!

I bet with the hood up the dirty rat didn't find being under the hood nearly as attractive. The picture of Daisy waiting it out is pretty funny.

Your wife's car looks like a Toyota Venza, weren't there some issues with rodents getting into the wiring with some Toyota models due to the composition of the wiring insulation?

Don't know about Toyota Venza but can tell you about Jaguar

I love these kind of stories. I had squirrels gnaw on some under hood wiring on a Ford F250 and it ran about $400 to get that taken care of. My dog Molly? Pure bred American cocker spaniel, water dog, bred to retrieve waterfowl with that soft jaw..a real hunter...BUT...had zip, zero, nada interest in those squirrels. Cars and trucks are for taking rides in with head out window, not for working.:D

The other incident that comes to mind is my work colleague, Jurgen, a great engineer and friend. He finally was able to buy his dream car, a 2012 Jaguar XF (supercharged). Didn't have it home a week and it wouldn't start...something had chewed through almost all of the under hood wiring, including the computer plug-ins which are a hard plastic. This was a $68K type car and it had to be rewired. He was sick about it.

Never did find out what the animal that did it was.

Good on Daisy...great guard!

30 or so years ago we had a cocker spaniel that would catch and kill blue jays and bring them to me.
One day my oldest (Then 13) came to me and said "Dad, Tippy did something disgusting today. When I went out back he laid a dead bird at my feet." She screamed and ran inside.
I explained that the bird was a gift and told her that next time she should pet him and call him a good boy. She learned a dog lesson that day.
All of my kids (And grandkids) are "Critter people" with dogs, cats, hamsters, and turtles, but not all in the same house.

Priss was my rescue Border/Terrier mix would catch chipmunks in my Uncle's garage. One shake and they would be dead.
