A close friend of mine served multiple tours in Vietnam as a member of the 5th Special Forces and recounted stories of some of our "Gallant South Vietnamese Allies" shooting at U.S. Troops now & again.
He said that early on during his first tour he had asked an experienced SF Trooper how he should deal with this "Friendly" Fire issue and that old hand had told him, "Receive Friendly Fire.....Return Friendly Fire."

I've seen this quote attributed to Will Rogers, Mark Twain and Artemus Ward (Charles Farrar Browne). Since Artemus Ward influenced Mark Twain and Mark Twain influenced pretty much everyone who was/is really funny, I can only conclude that Twain stole it from Ward and Rogers stole it from both of them.

My Dad used to tell me:, never get in the water 'till you know how to swim.
He also told me that if I were out on the lake in my boat and wanted a cigarette but nothing to light it with, all you got to do is take a cigarette out of the pack and throw it in the lake and as a result of that your boat will be one cigarette lighter. I do truly miss him.
