Your Favorite Funeral Music

I've left written instructions that I would like to have Beethoven's Sixth Symphony (The Pastorale) as recorded by a good orchestra played at my funeral. To my mind, its the most beautiful piece of music ever penned, and covers the emotional gamut of life itself, from extreme joy to crashing tragedy. For those who might remember, the movie "Soylent Green" featured the music at the end-of-life sequence.

I hate funerals. I have been to enough. I swear I'll never go to another funeral for as long as I live.

However, I would prefer music that meant something to me in my life; Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, The Kingston Trio, The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, with the final song being "In My Life" by the Beatles.

I want the Rolling Stones' "I know it's only rock 'n' roll, but I like it" at the Wake. . the pipers will get to play "Will ye no' come home again?" and Amazing Grace" at the cemetery. And to prove the tough guys wrong, "Danny Boy", so they ALL cry. (even tho it won't necessarily be for me...) John

The songs I want played at my funeral are...

Against The Wind by Bob Segar.
The Dance by Garth Brooks.
Fire and Rain by James Taylor.
He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones.
Go Rest High On That Mountain by Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless.

That's like.....10 songs! Do expect people to stay that long???

As for me, I'll be dead, so I don't give 2 shiz what kind of music they play. I guess I'd want them to play whatever my wife and/or other survivors want to hear. Save the bagpipe money for beer and food at the reception. Or if she REALLY wants to hear bagpipes for free, get a few cats from the pound and lock them in a metal garbage can with a can of sardines.

Maybe I'd like the audience to hear Clapton's "Forever Man" since I'll be finally talking to the boss.....

Interesting topic. The only funeral I have ever attended that I liked was for the wife of an older friend. She died a perfect death - told him she felt tired, went to bed early, and died in her sleep before he joined her that evening - time span of less than 2 hours.

For Peg's "funeral," Floyd had prepared a little speech consisting of remembrances of her, as did her son, and a couple of their closest friends did likewise. A clergyman opened and closed the organized part of the ceremony with brief prayers. The rest of the evening was spent just meandering around, discussing our recollections of her while the music she and Floyd danced to in their younger years was softy played over the room's PA system. Punch and cookies were served. The body was already in the ground.

Though the music was not from my generation, it meant a lot to me that it was from the happiest time in their lives, and it was curiously uplifting - not depressing or morbid at all to think about that. (I later learned that Peg had specified the structure of the event, so it was what she wanted.)

For myself, I would prefer a selection of Strauss, but doubt anyone will be there to listen. :)

Not traditional funeral music, but everyone has heard way more than enough of that.

He died too?!?!?! Less than two hours later?!?!? And who was Floyd?

It would be sort of cool of Smokey Robinson stopped by and did "I'm Gonna Miss You", but I'm hoping he goes before I do since he's older...
