Your first fish?

OK. Time to fess up.:D

I remember the first fish I caught. Mainly because I am not much of a fisherman and I didn't go fishing that many times.

I was about 9 years old. I went fishing with my father, my father liked fishing, mainly because he came from a long lineage of fisherman and also because he loved fish(me not so much when I was young:rolleyes:). He never owned a fishing rod in is life though. He just had this H shaped wooden block with the line wrapped around it and used to catch a whole lot of fish that way.

So afishing we went one fine morning. I live at the mouth of a river and most fishing is done on the water front. My father picked a spot but the fish weren't biting much and I was bored to death. Finally, having caught only 4 of 5 little fish, my father called it a fishing morning and told me to pull up my line. I, that was equiped with a fishing tack just like my father's, started rolling my line around the block as fast as I could.

And then, as my line was coming near the surface, I caught a garfish by it's tail. it wasn't a "big" garfish, but was a good sized one.

It was my father who had the "catch of the day"(his and mine) for lunch.:D

Almost 10 years went by before I had another go at fishing.:D

Kurusu,
I am curious, I have never heard of the fish we call Garfish in Europe. Please, what is the name in Portuguese of the fish you referred to in your post.
Thanks! Steve W

If my fading memory serves me correctly, my college roommate had something like that in her fishtank. I think she called it a Needlenose Gar.

Similar looks. but not the same fish.

If salt-water, it is called a half-beak.

Don't remember my first fish but I remember the trip. Fishing off the breakwater at Alamitos Channel between Long Beach and Seal Beach in So Cal. Fish was likely a perch or a sculpin.

Grew up in SoCal fishing the ocean and Mexican waters. Majored in Marine Biology and worked primarily as a Fish Bio (along with bears, wolves, etc) in the PNW. Seen ocean sunfish, 6-8 foot diameter purple jellies (Sunfish was eating one), a dozen species of whales, 1000 dolphin "superpod", a 30 foot basking shark and a giant squid (18 foot but 12 feet were the clasping tentacles=body and crown were only 6 feet). Been bit by an octopus, a shark (well, a baby!), and a barracuda. Stung by stingrays and jelly fish.

Kurusu, I believe the fish in in your post are what is usually called Ballyhoo here in the Southern US. I have eaten them crispy fried as in your picture many times in the Caribbean Islands where they are called Balao or Balaju.
I have never seen them here in Louisiana except imported frozen, they are a very good bait for offshore trolling. ,
I see on the internet that the Ballyhoo and other Needlefish are also called Garfish in some parts of the US and other countries. Needle Fish are called "Agujon" in the Caribbean.
Below a picture of what is called Garfish here, there are several varieties, they grow to a huge size couple hundred pounds

My first fish was age 5 at the Audubon Park lagoon in New Orleans. We were fishing (imagine a bunch of 5-6 year old's unaccompanied by an adult except for a 9 year old big sister today!!!) one morning and I caught a bullhead about 5-6 inches long on a rolled up piece of white bread. Things like that tend to stick in ones head :D

Nice warm day on the pond Friday the 19th.

Took the boat out to finally get wet this year to a warm water lake to learn some more on how to fish it.

Fished from 10-2pm and sent my partner home with a cooler full of White bass, Crappie and a 30" channel catfish that I caught, jigging a 3/4 oz. spoon near the bottom for walleye or Wipers.

No love from the last two, that I was after.......... maybe next time.
Like I said, I'm still learning this "Stained" Alkali lake from a boat.

Had fun catching and no cleaning............. !!
Great day.

Well, thanks to my Grandfather, I don't remember ever not fishing. I don't, however, remember my first fish. I do remember my son's. It was a sunfish. At 2 1/2 he baited his own hook with a worn, quickly caught the fish, held it in his hands while I took the hook out, and then stuck his thumb in his mouth. I asked what that tasted like and he gave me this quizzical look; "fish, what you think".
