Extra like for the picture BWZ. It made your good post better.
OK. Time to fess up.
I remember the first fish I caught. Mainly because I am not much of a fisherman and I didn't go fishing that many times.
I was about 9 years old. I went fishing with my father, my father liked fishing, mainly because he came from a long lineage of fisherman and also because he loved fish(me not so much when I was young). He never owned a fishing rod in is life though. He just had this H shaped wooden block with the line wrapped around it and used to catch a whole lot of fish that way.

So afishing we went one fine morning.I live at the mouth of a river and most fishing is done on the water front. My father picked a spot but the fish weren't biting much and I was bored to death.
Finally, having caught only 4 of 5 little fish, my father called it a fishing morning and told me to pull up my line. I, that was equiped with a fishing tack just like my father's, started rolling my line around the block as fast as I could.
And then, as my line was coming near the surface, I caught a garfish by it's tail.it wasn't a "big" garfish, but was a good sized one.
It was my father who had the "catch of the day"(his and mine) for lunch.
Almost 10 years went by before I had another go at fishing.![]()
Kurusu,
I am curious, I have never heard of the fish we call Garfish in Europe. Please, what is the name in Portuguese of the fish you referred to in your post.
Thanks! Steve W
If my fading memory serves me correctly, my college roommate had something like that in her fishtank. I think she called it a Needlenose Gar.In Portuguese it's called peixe agulha*.

And this is what to do with them.

Edit. * translates as needle fish.
