Your First S&W

My first S&W? A Model 1917 that I bought at a gun show in 1963 when I was 16 years old. As I recall I paid thirty-five bucks for the gun, and for another five bucks the guy selling it tossed in a Hunter holster.

Thirty-five bucks????? geez you got ripped off! I bought a Colt 1917 in 1964 for $23.16 OTD....I've still got the receipt and the gun. Gun came with two half moon clips, had been refinished badly and had stocks that were enormous. Bought it at Carter's Gun Shop in Shabbona IL. Wow did they have the guns.....don't think I've ever seen so many lever guns in one spot. Ahh....the good ole days.

686 4", back in 1996. Paid less than $400, IIRC. Sold it 2 years ago but now have a 66-2 4", 65-3 3", 640-1, K-22 CM, and a 442 no lock (on layaway).

First was a Model 10 with 4" barrel, issued by USAF. Second was a Model 12 Airweight with 2" barrel, issued by USAF. First one purchased by me was a Model 12 Airweight with 2" barrel, meant to match the one issued in SE Asia.

My very first S&W was bought on my 21st birthday in 1970.It was a model 19. I Still have it today.It sits in the safe with 39 other S&W revolvers . I have only sold 3 S&W's in 41 years and I wish I had them back!A (a 6in 28 a mod 60 and a 6 in 27-2)

My first was a model 629 after they were first released. Read an article in a magazine and fell in love with the way it looked. It started a long love affair with Smiths.

My First S&W = My First Handgun

1972 - I was 18 and wanted a handgun. I found one of these:
K38Masterpiece.jpg

A brand spanking new Model 14 K-38 Masterpiece. Local dealer had it listed for $102 and change.
I wasn't old enough to buy it from the dealer, so Dad bought it and we immediately transferred it to me at the Sheriff's Department. (Michigan and their "Inspection Certificate").
I only had this one for about a year or so when I traded it in on a 4" Combat Magnum, but I'd love to have another one again.

My 1st. was and is a m&p 38 snub-nose. My Great-Granfather give it to me the day I was born. 8-18-54. It rests in a Bucklin Ks. State Bank money bag with 12 rounds and a pair of dice in it. It will be that way when I pass it on to my nephew. Wish I knew the story of the dice.

My first was a S&W 686 6"....what a tack driver! I remember hitting 1lb coffee cans @ 50yds. I am NO pistolero...this was maybe 25 years ago. The bullets were reloads. I was so impressed by the gun...I sold it years later very, very regrettably...could kick myself now. Now I am in the market for a good 38spl in 6". I love loading 38's and shooting targets.

686P-4, 4". My first firearm. Bought last year. Sept 1996 production.

My first was a used 629-? 8 3/8" classic hunter with the unfluted cylinder. I was 17 so my dad was background checked for it, but it was mine. I wish I still had it. I sold it for too little in a moment of poor judgement. I replaced it with a 6 1/2 29-2.

The first S&W I purchased for myself NEW is this model 617 no dash TT, TH, TS, 8 3/8ths incher. I ordered an model 17 in that configuration, however all distributors were out of stock, so my dealer accepted this gun and sold it to me for the same price as what I ordered. He told me later that he wished I'd told him to "stuff it" because the liked the gun, its trigger and the grips so much. Still my favorite .22 handgun, beating out quite a few other S&W's and Rugers in the safe.

The only S&W I've received as a gift is the model 36 Chief's Special shipped in 1968 pictured here. It was the only handgun my dad ever purchased or carried and it served him well for over 30 years until he gave it to me. He paid a whopping $79.50 for it in February 1968, shot it nearly every month for 30 years, most of the ammo was Plus P and it is still reasonably tight and retains 90% of its original finish. I retired it from active CCW duty, but I wouldn't hesitate to carry it at any time.

Model 29 Blue, 6 1/2" 3 T's in Wood Case purchased in Germany at the American Rod & Gun Club in 1975 while I was in the Army.

model 48-2 with 6 inch barrel in 1975 that rode in the truck with me and took lots of varmints.

My first was actually two. The Rod & Gun club in Darmstadt Germany in mid '80s had a small gun show an one of the people selling had a 14-3 an 17-3, an since the show had the registration office there, an since I was already an E-6/SSG, I didn't need my CO's permission to purchase. I still have both an the boxes they came in. I have no idea how many rounds both these guns shot over the years, nor how many they are still going to shoot till my son gets them.
