the success of Chicago gun control

Chicago brought some of this on their own. A few years back they made a point to start demolishing some of the large public housing projects like Cabrini–Green, which in and of themselves were death traps wrought with unspeakable acts.

BUT... they were more or less self contained horror houses. People knew where they were and avoided them. Squads of gangs did "hit and runs" out into other parts of town, but for the most part, they stuck to certain areas of town.

But... when these places were demolished, those people had to go somewhere, so the people, and the violence they perpetuated went with them into other parts of town.

The same thing happened in places like Atlanta and to a much lesser degree my city.

Here, rather than deal with the problem, they built nice new condo-type housing projects or bought up foreclosed homes in suburbia and "section 8'ed" them, moved the "tenants" into them, and then literally paid non-criminals to live there. So far it's not working out too well for the non-criminals. And in some cases has turned decent neighborhoods into ghetto.

Bad neighborhoods don't necessarily start bad. Many began as middle class working neighborhoods decades ago. It's not uncommon for "granny" to find her once peaceful neighborhood to have changed. Often widowed, on limited fixed income, property values slashed, there just aren't a lot of options. It's the home "granny" has lived in 40 years.

I think the criminals ought to be moved to a new permanent address instead of expecting the law-abiding to move from their homes.

Exactly. I've used my "flight" option on three occasions just to live in a safe, law abiding neighborhood. Those neighborhoods that we left went down hill within the first few months of the demographic adjustment. A person should never have to relocate just to avoid impending danger, yet there is no choice. Even gated communities aren't safe. Carry 24/7.

I heard Jesse Jacksons daughter argueing for more gun control today on the Lou Dobbs show. She said more controls would stop gun violence, until Lou asked her about Chicago and how that was working out, then she tried to change the subject. Classic example of a lefty getting waxed. :D

You have to analyze this situation the way national politics are currently analyzed through leftist logic:
Without their tough gun laws, just think how many MORE shootings there would have been in Chicago...

Lou should have asked her if her father employed armed security. Then suggest the Jackson family start by disarming their own security.

Oh yes, I would prefer two huge young armed security men to carrying my own weapon. I just cannot afford it. I can however, afford to carry a gun.

It is a bit like politicians that use huge Chevy Suburbans telling us we should buy more fuel efficient cars.

Certainly some people do use that logic. I had a license to carry in Georgia, then moved to Chicago without even knowing there was a handgun ban. Personally, I think there might be less shootings if the criminals thought there was a chance the law abiding citizens might shoot back. I know I would feel much more comfortable if I could legally carry.

Allowing gun possession in such cities may have it's advantages but I can think of some downsides. For anyone to simply buy a gun without proper training and practice is like buying a car without having driven one. An accident waiting to happen. There would need to be in place an infrastructure that supports gun ownership; dealers, training facilities, etc. In my state guns are as commen as cars and people grow up accustomed to their presence. In communities where this is not the case they have a steep learning curve ahead of them, should they decide to allow guns.
