Is it me (probably) or are forum posters scary?

I frequent another forum here in CA that has a lot of young gun owners. I really believe that many get their gun education and information from the video game Call of Duty or other warrior games.
Many have a very immature attitude and think all the black guns are tacticool etc.
I'm finding some are starting to mature a bit and showing interest in revolvers, which leads them to forums such as this one.
We need to calmly educate these folks when we realize they are exhibiting bad judgement and gun handling. Be patient.

I have learned a great deal on this forum. I have also spent a ton of money buying great revolvers and learning about them. It does chap my *** that a lot of the members don't try to use that "SEARCH" or "TAG" feature before asking how much is Grandpa's .38 and will it be a good trade for a tupperware gun!!

By the way, just when you think you know everything, there are a few useless facts that you may not have heard of, including.
1. Panama hats are made in Ecuador.
2. Reindeer like to eat bananas.
3. Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny) was allergic to carrots.
4. More people are killed annually by donkeys than plane crashes.
5. Most American cars honk in the key of F.
6. One-quarter of bones in the human body are in your feet.
7. A giraffe can go without water longer than a camel.
8. It is illegal to hunt camels in Arizona.
9. In a lifetime the average person produces enough spit to filling two swimming pools. (don't ask me what size)
10. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is thirteen seconds.

Re: #10, gosh darn it, now I have to spend Sunday inventing a chicken mortar just to break the record.

I want to put this in the lounge rather than respond to a specific thread and really insult someone. So, after nearly 10 years on this forum I've learned a lot but it seems some of the recent posts leave me to wonder how some folks can be gun owners and be so clueless and well, stupid.

Years ago this forum was purely a wealth of information ( it still is) and sharing of "how to" info on S&Ws.

I've been around guns for 50+ years and handguns 45 years or so. Before I bought my first handgun I researched and read and and and..you get the idea.

It seems like in a lot of posts I read people are clueless and doing some downright scary things with their guns.

As to clueless if you are a newbie and you are asking questions because you really want to learn, that's fine. A think a lot of posts are "I want to be validated in whatever I already think"

I could point to specific threads to illustrate my point, but that would be rude.

I've also noticed since Obama got elected and thousands joined back in January '09 a lot of long time contributors/posters to this forum have disappeared. Either the grim reaper has showed up or they've moved on.

This was one fella if you mention a model (or pre-model) he would gladly show a picture of 20 to 30 of that gun WITH boxes.

I know I'll take some heat but just because the 2nd amendment says so, not everyone should own a gun. Heck I know of several folks who shouldn't be driving a car.

Oh well, opinions are like.....

Dave

So...instead of being upfront with someone that you thought was "scary" or "clueless" about a post they made,, you decide to start another thread and basically talk about them without mentioning names....so you wont be rude....I sometimes wonder about the integrity of people instead of what they post and ask.

I've had a series of running skirmishes with one staff moderator at another forum over his and other members habit of referring to firearms as toys and training/range time as either play time or games.

You sir, have hit on the one thing that make me cringe every time I see a post that starts with "Got a new Toy!" While the poster may never intend to use his new gun as a weapon, it ain't a toy!

Frankly, I cringe a little when someone refers to a firearm as a "weapon" and is immediately reprimanded for giving aid and comfort to the enemy by suggesting that our "sporting goods" might actually be used against another human being. Not as much as I cringe at the mall ninjas, but a cringe all the same.

This board has a certain standard of civility directly to addressing one another. Threads have been yanked for being openly rude or mean.

I just wondered what others on the forum thought about folks who admit they do scary things (dangerous things) with guns.

There are some right ways and wrong ways to use guns.

Besides insighful job questioning my integrity when you don't know me.

Wow!

It was just a way of seeing how others felt. I'm not necessarily right and no I don't want to directly hurt someone's feelings. Or be rude just for the sake of being rude.

What's wrong with that?

P.s. Thanks to nipster for his kind response.

These boorish slugs deserve a few educational minutes with a pillowcase full of doorknobs.

That may be the most eloquent thing I've ever heard. And completely true! Some folks aren't worth the gravel it would take to cave their empty heads in.

And to the OP...........I think the way you presented your thoughts was both tactful and effective. We may not know exactly who you're referring to, but we're generally pretty sure it ain't us! ;)

...he was aiming directly at me . He fired and a bullet whizzed near my head! He kept levering and shooting at me 6 or 7 shots, I heard every bullet tearing on each side of me close...

I am sorry - your story is very scary. However, I just started laughing - you should have shot at him (high naturally). Could you imagine what he would have done when he saw the "deer" shoot back? Sorry, I am still laughing about this - my apologies.

Should I leave?

Yeah agreed.

I do think that it is a little picky to want to banish someone because they use the term "toy". It may be colloquial but often (around here anyway) a guy's hobbies are referred to as his "toys". And shooting can be a hobby as well as for self defense. In those cases the term is appropriate.
Had a guy on the reloading forum chide someone for referring to "recipes". Said this wasn't proper and gave the poster what-for. I mean to the point of "this shows you have absolutely no idea what you are doing." Funny thing is several manuals use the same term.
Not to mention the revolver guys who refer to any polymer gun as "Tupperware" in disdain regardless of the fact that millions of folks own and enjoy them.
I won't even go into the veiled racial slurs some like to sneak into the conversation thinking they are being clever...

We are all sorts here. Some white collar, some blue collar, some with ring-around-the-collar. We are young and old, male and female, white, black, American, Canadian, Mexican, Australian, German, British, and more. We are conservative, progressive, independent, uninterested in political parties.
Not my forum and I appreciate my time here. I have a bit of a time biting my tongue and have spoken out against comments I thought to be cruel or hurtful. As a consequence I been reminded by the Mods that it is not my place to do so. I learn and move on. My advice to the OP is that if someone makes a post that is really dangerous, contact a Mod. They are vigilant and even-handed.
Otherwise - if it is intended that one has to be of a certain mindset to participate, please let me know. I can find the door...

I understand that postion, the problem is that this "one size fits all," in an effort to be fair, usually just makes forums boring. I also regard them as a sort of bait-and-switch. Let me give you an example.

It's no secret that motorcycle forums are drek. One bike moderator told me that he agrees that 30% of the members were posers, and didn't even own a bike of any make. With that, I went looking for a solid forum, and I found one.

It was a small group, but the guys rode. Then banner advertising reared its ugly rear, and the admin wanted the forum to be "kinder, gentler, and more inclusive." The place turned into just another poser party within a month.

Now get this, it was me that got banned for attempting to tighten up standards, especially on brotherhood and old school philosophies. This was over a year ago. And get this, a few days ago a member phoned me. My name came up inferring to "the good old days."

I came here to learn about new Smiths. I had collected large frame revolvers and automatics because Wisconsin formerly had no carry provision. That changed this year, I needed info. And frankly, it was nice to find a group of guys to just hang out with.

At least for now, we can discuss any make of firearm, give honest opnions and scroll through the threads without tripping over Viagra ads. Money has tremendous sway when balancing forum content.

BTW, I believe in this condition so fiercely that I am now not affiliated with any bike forum, not even as a lurker. They're trash, and my attendance is not mandatory.

I guess what worries me is that are more people become casual gun owners for personal defense reasons, they rely more on movies and tv than they do study, study, investigate, learn etc.

Dave
I'm afraid it is not just guns.
Welcome to the new yardstick for our society as a whole!

I can't condemn a new guy for asking questions as long as he has an open mind. Too many questions are asked by people that either don't want to hear the truth or get mad when you disagree or offer a different opinion.
I think a friend of mine summed it up brilliantly about 30 years ago:
"Let me tell you a question...." ;)

4. More people are killed annually by donkeys than plane crashes.
That is why we don't allow 'donkeys' here.

8. It is illegal to hunt camels in Arizona.
Well, nuts! How tough are they on poachin'?

9. In a lifetime the average person produces enough spit to filling two swimming pools. (don't ask me what size)
eewwwww..... think I'll pass on a swim today.

Not as much as I cringe at the mall ninjas, but a cringe all the same.

Then again, we as gun owners get up in arms when the anti's refer to 2A as hunting rights, when we all know the main intent was for use as weapons for self defense.

Which way do we want it?
