Gun oil or gun grease??

Look at the high end 1911s....many (Brown, Baer & Dan Wesson) specify very clearly oil only, no grease. They do that for a reason. Wait, maybe they employ "snot nosed kids" too as lead engineers too

Actually, Sig not only recommends grease on the slides of their 1911's, they also include a small sample of TW25B with every gun now. I have two.

Here's some good advice from a reliable source. What I've always thought is that oil is fine for typical shooting. However, to keep oil off your clothes when using a carry weapon, use some grease as it stays put and doesn't leak off.

Sigs And Mil-Comm

I agree with that 100%. Find some people you can trust (which is getting harder to do) and use their advice as a guide but not a rule.

However, I use TW25B on the rails, oil on the rest.

Sigs ship with Mil-COMM applied at factory__they claim and
are supposed to include a sample with each pistol. That said, I
got a replacement P232 last year directly from Sig (NH) but
no sample.
I use TW25b grease too. It resembles hand lotion and isn't
thick at all. Their oil is the same base product as their grease.
One should follow the directions the first time using the product
for best results.
Its my understanding the military uses it on their gatling guns.
Mil-COMM states as have reviewers it is "Extreme Lubrication".
Likely other good lubricants are fine for average shooters, I feel.
That said, I really like it because it stays and you use very, very
little of it.

High moly grease

I'm going to throw one other item into the fray. High moly grease. I'm not referring to bearing grease at 3% moly but 60+% moly paste. I first found this via my air rifle hobby, then used it in my custom 1911 rails. Then have I used it on a variety of rifles and pistols for a poor mans trigger job. High moly paste bonds with friction to the metal and is extremely slick. I use a toothpick to put a small amount on to any sliding surface with amazing results. Honda 60 is one brand or you can pick it up here Super Moly Paste. This small pot is enough for years of use

I bought Wilson products, grease & oil, for my Colt 1911, I follow what the handbook that came with my shield says about lubrication. No grease on this one.

I've been using Hoppe's #9 & Rem-oil on all my firearms & carry guns since 1989 and I as of yet had not one gun fail, rust, wear out, or even had a part replaced. My Remington 870 express magnum that I've had since 1991 still looks new (ish). I have a small terrycloth rag that I squirt Rem-oil on & use that to rub down the outside of my firearms, I use rem oil for lubricating as well.. If they sold it by the gallon I'd buy it... I'd use it as an aftershave moistureizer if I could.

While I still use Hoppe's to clean, I don't lube the moving parts with Rem Oil any more. Here in Florida, after a few weeks, the gun's lube points would be dry, so now I use Tetra grease. However, after a clean & lube, I will still spray the outside of the gun with Rem Oil. GARY

The amounts I have, I imagine my boy will be getting some of these when I pass. I have 50 year old guns from my dad that look 50 days old. Says something about these non designer lubricants.

Kroil is very good. Works great as both a cleaner, and a lube.

I like a little touch of Shooter's Choice Gun Grease on the slide rails. Other than that its Hoppes 9 and CLP for me!

I use denatured alcohol in the striker channel about every 500-800 rounds.

Ball bearing grease on the slide. Synthetic motor oil on the barrel. The combined price is $10 and will last for years. Doesn't smell as minty fresh as FrogLube but works great and doesn't bust the bank.

So what you're saying is my use of what sticks to the "pop top" of the synthetic high temp water proof grease tubes I use for mowers and other equipment won't do all the things you list and using that on things that slide is why I can't hit the broadside of a barn? Thank you for clearing that up

Use a little grease of it floats your boat. A dab of axle grease on the slide inserts isn't going to hurt but oil is probably enough.

Rem Oil with magical Teflon and the other dry lubes won't cut it.

I'm amazed at the manufacturers of products that claim to be made of miracle substances like the stuff is made from unicorn testicle extract. I've stopped drinking the koolaid.

I can guarantee you all of the "gun" branded products you are paying two to thee times the price for is made from common materials. Look at some of the MSDS.

Just about any oil works better than nothing and some just as well as name brands. ATF, motor oil, 3 in 1, take your pick. Don't over-think it.

Ballistol MSDS:

Ballistol is based on medicinal grade white mineral oil

I found out from the MSDS my Hoppes Elite gun oil is pure, odorless, biodegradable mineral oil. I lube my pistols and AR15 BCGs with it and the oil stays slick and in place for hundreds, maybe thousands of rounds if I didn't clean it off. You don't have to trust me. You can trust Hoppes.

Pure mineral oil can be had for 25-50¢ per ounce.

I use a Texaco Moly grease too!. I use only the slightest amount on the rails of my guns which are all steel. I don't own any polymer frames. Actually, when I'm done, you can't even see the the film of grease. After each shooting I clean it all off and reapply. Been doing this for years on my Sig, 1st Gens, 3rd Gens, 1911s and others and will continue to do so.
