What Would You Have Done?

You were there, and are now here to talk about it.

No, I was not there, but know someone who was.

Did not mean to give the impression this was a first hand experience. It was not.

If your friend shot the perpetrator, it would be justifiable. There are many regrets in life but think of this; the perpetrator was probably a dead man walking. He was going to get shot by another driver or by the police.

I would hate to think of the scenario where your friend hadn't stop the perpetrator and a loved one was killed. I couldn't live with myself if it happened to me.

Better to live with regrets but still be alive instead of just existing but dead inside.

The answer is simple! If the other guy has a gun in his hand then, ....... you have no time; and you have no choice. Bad things happen really really fast in a gunfight. Me? I'd probably give the guy an all expenses paid trip to someplace exotic like, say, Mozambique!

(Bon Voyage!) :)

There was a similar incident that happened on an interstate not too far from here but in Tennessee, not sure if they are related?

If I can't drive away, and the man with a drawn firearm is actively attempting to enter my vehicle with wife and child inside, then I tell my wife that 'it's going to get loud here', and then I perform the indicated response.

I shutter to think about how loud my .41 magnum Speer Gold Dots will be inside a closed vehicle. But that's better than seeing my family get shot by a maniac trying to avoid going back to the big house.

A Paul Harvey moment, "AND NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORY" SO, how did it play out?

According to news accounts, the suspect was captured after running into a nearby neighborhood that was saturated with cops. He was taken to a hospital with "injuries" or an "unspecified illness".

Charges: "assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, common law robbery, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest on Saturday."

Theoretically, this person shouldn't get out of the slammer for a few years. Based on past incidents, my prediction is that he'll get bail and be back out on the streets very soon. He may have to wear an ankle monitor, which he may or may not decide to cut off before he commits his next felony.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I AGREE 100%

Surely not the last we will hear about him. I often feel a 35 cent solution would not only do society a favor but be a kindness to the ***. The career meth dealer that left me disabled, forced to medically retire 15 years before planned, a hit & run with injuries in a stolen car, cops knew him on a first name basis wasn't even charged. A classic, let's try to go after the victim event. No I'm not bitter, MUCH.

The first thing I never pull up tight to the vehicle ahead of me so I can go around them if I need to. Now if other vehicles were beside me and couldn't go around I'd have no choice but shoot. I would shoot through the glass and take my chances with flying glass but if at all possible I'd try and get the window down. Not likely that'd be possible but save on glass and might reduce the noise.
My first wife's uncle was border patrol on the Texas/Mexico years ago. He was telling me about shooting his model 19 through the open passenger window in the Scout he was driving at a jack rabbit of all things. He said he regretted it as he couldn't hear for days. I'd not want to shoot inside a vehicle either but would to save my life and other's.

I might have shot him if he was a clear target. That said, before I moved back to where I'm at now from Austin. My BiL and sister were helping me move. We had the last load on his truck, and made our way down Rundburg? Or Rutland? I now forget which. Anyway, there was an intersection that was gaining a bad reputation for beggers wanting money by intimidating passing cars who were unlucky to catch the red light. Several stories had been in the news recently about these bums jumping on the hoods of cars demanding money.

We were all packing heaters. A, 357, a snub 357, and I was carrying my Walter P-38. We were first in line at said stop, when a guy walked over, made the mistake of sticking head into drivers window. All three of us pulled and aimed our guns at his head. The ending was quite comical. When he was staring down the barrels of three guns, his eyes were saucers and he backed away saying, no offense, no offense. We never said a word and drove on.

You were lucky: he believed you were serious. Some people might have thought you were joking. That would be the time to pass out ear plugs to everyone in the car.

Had he been dumb enough to try anything? I doubt he would be breathing long. All three of us were deadly serious.:)

Cops were already shooting at him so if you shot him there shouldn't be very much legal cow droppings.

The first part of this is spot on. Leave enough room to evade whenever you stop. In this case, the preferred answer is to hit him with the car - MUCH better stopper than a handgun round.

However - you will not have time to fiddle-futz with the window. You'll need to concentrate on the fight - draw, aim, shoot, and keep shooting until you perceive he is out of the fight. I almost never have my windows down, partly for safety, partly because I have no heat tolerance and often have the A/C on if it 50+ and sunny.

Should have shot him, he doesn't respect any law, someone will have to someday, hopefully before he hurts anyone. I don't think any clear minded person that one would value an opinion from would say any different.

........ Maybe your wife is in the car with you. Maybe your little baby is strapped in a car seat in the back.

What would you have done? Don't throw in any "ifs" or "buts" or "depends on..." stuff. It's a simple question.

Realistically and seriously...what would you have done?

You can't have it both ways. You can't throw out a bunch of "maybe's" and then expect an answer without "ifs and buts".

The only honest answer here: I have no flipping idea what I would have done. Because I would have done what I would have been able to do. And that depends on a number of things: from which angle guy came, whether I could get at my gun, whether I actually had a shot, etc..

The question most people here answered is not what they would have done, but what they would have wanted to do. Big difference.
