I have four '03 Sringfields. The first was one that was left to me by my dad and had been sporterized by his uncle after he bought it from DCMP...the second I got at a shop in Kentucky when my wife and I were passing thru Lexington. The other two are the best, one from 1918, and the other from 1930. Both complete and matching barrel and receiver. Father in law's neighbor, ex marine sold me the pair for $1000. I was only gonna buy one, but Mrs. said to take both....

OH BOY, what was the payback.:D

I didn't want or need an AR either until I shot my neighbor's Colt.

Same darn thing when I shot his Ruger GP100 and decided I needed a .357. (Funny thing is that I'd had both in years past as duty firearms but had decided after retirement that I was just fine, thank you very much, with my Glocks and Remington 870.)

In fact, I don't even know why I continue to share beer and cigars with that evildoer. :p

I got even though. Now he lusts after my S&W's. :D

Feeling Nostalgic, listening to some old original Temptations. Brings back so many memories. My older sister Loved country music and I Loved Soul and Rock. Every Saturday after she got paid on Friday, we would go and she'd buy a Country Album and buy me a Temptations or a James Brown album.

Jamie was taken from us in 1972, she only 22. She died of what is now known as Pancreatic Cancer. I was only 14. I knew she was sick, but didn't know the extent of it, till Daddy came to my School, to pick me up and tell me she was gone. Momma was never right after that. Hell, none of us was never right again.

I've lost a total of three sisters. And miss them all. But Jamie was special. And the closest to me. She helped raise me. And another sister Reba Jean went out of control with pills just a few years later. And was found dead. Of an over dose. And my sister Patricia died just a few years ago from lung cancer. She was 55.

But every time I hear the Temptation's, i think back to the 60's and watching Jamie singing and dancing to the Temptations or the Supreme's, I smile and get a tear in my eye. My Love for her NEVER FADED.

Sorry for the tearful rant!

While out walking, I thought I should post a tune from 1945 in honor of the USS Yolo. I found this. It is stupid almost idiotic; not sure if it was a hit, but I remember my dad would play it when I was a kid. Everyone would laugh:

My dad was a huge Spike Jones fan. I remember well listening to his records in the late 40's and early 50's. Thanks for the memory.

There really are bound copies of the Captains Diary out there. Today's entry "the most superfluous (order) I ever made."...

Back to the USS Yolo, C. Homer Bast Comanding Officer, this date 1945, off the invasion beaches of Okinawa.

June 16, 1945

This was a night to remember! Four GQs kept all awake most of the night because of heckling raids. A first-quarter moon and plenty of light accounted for their actions. As usual, our protective cover was the smoke screen. Because of fewer ships the cover was not so good. For many minutes no smoke covered us at all. If this defense is used ships must draw closer. By the time all stations reported in as “manned and ready”, there was a whoosh accompanied by a swish and an explosion. Every man aboard automatically hit the deck, and my order to “take cover” was probably the most superfluous one I ever made. This was the first Baka launched in our direction; planes had, during the night, dropped bombs and launched Bakas from some distance away. Shore batteries fired on aircraft silhouetted by searchlights and brought one down. Quiet reigned briefly for a while, but then out of the smoke, at masthead height, came planes with engines roaring giving credence to the story that the Japanese are trying this new tactic - flying through the smoke 20 feet high hoping to hit something.

I was up at 0700, had breakfast and then toured the ship making notes of jobs to be done during availability. The smoke boat headquarters remain on board as do the crews. We still dispense what we have to about 10 LCTs and SCs daily.

Following four comparatively peaceful days, at 2030 the western Hagushi fire support area destroyer Twiggs (DD 591) was hit on the port side by a torpedo and sank in an hour. The explosion of her #2 magazine was visible to the men on deck of Yolo. Casualties were heavy with 126 killed. To halt the flights over the anchorage TF 38 sent five flights daily to hit Amami. Some of the smaller carriers were released as planes from the Okinawa fields have taken over more of the operations.

I could only wish my wife would say something like that to me!

My wife is great about anything I like...knives, guns, new 4Runner. If I'm happy, she's happy.

Of course, she being Sicilian, I've got to buy her new stilettos every so often to keep her happy.

(And I'm not talking about shoes...though she did do some runway modeling for Macy's back in the day and has good taste. Then again, marrying me 29 years ago might put the lie to that. :p)

Had a pretty good day today.
Went to the Y for spin class then the indoor pool.
After we got home, we strapped our boots on for a nice hike on our favorite mountain trail.
Wouldn't ya know it. When we got to the turn around point, the sky turned dark, the wind picked up and I thought for sure we were gonna get stormed on.
Oh well, the only way back to the truck's on foot and that's about three miles away.
Besides, hiking through a storm on a warm summer (almost) day's kinda cool.
Turned out that the skies cleared, the sun came out and we had a nice walk back to the truck.
Got home, cooked a chicken stir fry and I'm gonna relax for a little while.
Then I got a leather project to put a finish coat on and a coupla moccasins to work on.

My wife's family originally came from Sicily. However, she's not so much into fashion. Although she did do work as a lingerie model back in the day.

There's something about those Sicilian gals...;)

My maternal grandfather was from a small town called Cinisi outside Palermo. My wife's people came from a mountain village called Gagliano Castelferrato. (In fact her brother and sister were born there.)

We visited my grandfather's town when we were in Sicily but never got to her parents' village. We did hook up with some of her family in Catania, though.

We traveled in Italy from Switzerland to Sicily and I have to say that I loved Sicily for the warmth of the people and the natural beauty. (But it's all beautiful.)

I had an interesting dinner...I was making this sausage stir fry thing I've been making lately, & once everything was cooked we sat down to eat. The table had been set for awhile, as I was waiting on the rice steamer to do its thing. I plated the food & sat down at the table, reaching for a bottle of sriracha sauce. The sauce was cold when I took it out of the fridge, but warmed up while dinner was prepared. As I opened the bottle, sauce exploded out of the cap, catching me in the eyes. Very painful. I once got some jalapeno juice splashed in my eyes, & that was painful too. I don't know which one was worse, but I'm not even remotely interested in doing a side by side comparison...

Gives new meaning to the eyes have it! :p

More importantly, glad you're okay. Maybe you should take up a safer avocation like firearms and marksmanship. :D

Makes me glad I wear glasses.
