Anyone hear from the SteveinLV guy?

Just guessing, but I think you mean me. Yes, I'm here; no I wasn't at the Mandalay Bay area so I don't know what happened other than what the goons in the media tell us.

Latest thing from Metro here said 50 dead and 406 injured.

Did hear one amusing call-in on a radio show berating the local TV stations for bogus information last night. All I wanted to hear was my traffic news. The TV folks reported another shooter from the MGM Grand. That's easily explained by whoever told the TV folks not understanding "crack and thump" when it comes to locating the source of fire.

Folks,
We realize that this great tragedy will be on your hearts and minds for a long time to come.
You are free to discuss it.
With 59 dead and over 500 injured, just remember that there are THOUSANDS of people affected when we include the friends and family.
Have consideration for those people as you discuss it.
I'll also remind you that all forum rules still apply. As the usual suspects start screaming once again for more gun controls and bans, we won't need to go into general political commentary, the bashing of Liberals or Democrats, Obamacare, or any other banned topic.

Don't start other threads on this topic- post here.

May God be with the victims, their families, their friends, and all of us. We are all that mad man's victims.

Thank you to all the first responders that put their lives on the line and had to go through this also, many of them and family will suffer for a long time also.....

My son has been a LVMPD officer for 11 years, thankfully he was not working last night. When something like the floods in Texas happen , the Cajun navy showed up to help not asking for anything for their efforts stories about the selflessness of people at the concert are coming out.
Strangers stopping to help people who had fallen, people using shirts as tourniquets , stopping cars and having driver haul wounded to the hospitals, tearing down fences to use as stretchers and on and on.
Out of the worst of times the best of people jump in and help.

The Shooter engaged targets of opportunity from the 32nd floor. He was well out of range of legally concealed defensive sidearms, sadly. If only he was in the engagement zone of a sheepdog...

Clearly far too well planned for that to happen.

There is one thing that baffles me slightly in all this given the apparent vantage point, but I'll go think some more before enlarging on that thought.

I don't know if I am unique,or if others are like me. I can smell death. If I go to a house where a homicide has taken place, I can smell death from the street. I'm not joking or being dramatic.

The smell of death in Las Vegas will linger for a long time. May the souls of those who were murdered find eternal peace.

Of course the news, regardless of channel, has been filled with the usual misinformation, lack of information, lies and distortions...it has sadly become to be what we expect during these type of events.

Given that, I was shocked to hear an interview with Brit Hume (discussing the tone of POTUS' response speech) in which he suggest we take a day to mourn and absorb the event before we jump to the various inevitable political speeches and jostling. Sorry I do not have the clip - it helped me believe there may yet be some small flicker of decency alive in the community of what we now call journalism.

The stories of heroism and altruism, of strangers helping others in deadly peril, saving lives and supporting those heartbroken and terrified victims, should ignite that special feeling, that lump-in-the-throat, "only in the USA" pride of being American...a feeling that can inspire us and bring us together (if only for an unfortunately short period).

Amongst the prayers and thoughts for these victims, please do not forget all of those still in need from the recent hurricanes.

Apart from a Chicxulub size asteroid impact, there is no universal solution to problems of human interaction.

Smoke alarms and sprinklers neither prevented the 9/11 hijackers from flying planes into the World Trade Center, nor did they prevent the towers from collapsing. Does that mean that they're ALWAYS useless? Of course not.

Strangely, you'll be told that since handguns didn't prevent THIS attack, or provide an effective defense from 400 yards away, they're USELESS and should be BANNED.

I'm FAR more likely to have a grease fire in my kitchen or to be accosted at the ATM than I am to have somebody fly a plane into my apartment or be machinegunned from four hundred yards away. In the LIKELY occurrence, the smoke alarm and my 3 1/2" Citadel are VERY useful.

I've noticed that across the board, the mis [and dis] information has been especially bad this time.

Even self-proclaimed "pro-gun" commentators have spouted nonsense the equal of any anti-gun cultist on the Huffington Post.
