Spam (meat) alert!

Over a year ago got food poisoning at a local restaurant. They said that I could have eaten something bad two weeks before illness. They asked at the hospital then the health department called. I was off work for 5 days and about 12 hours at the hospital. Talk them in to letting me out when vitals where good. Never was that sick in my life so I hope you are all right and stay that way.

On Sat ., I opened a can of Spam, the 25% Less Sodium sort that I buy when I eat Spam at all.

I thought the color was a little more pale than what I expected, but figured it was a matter of color variance in production lots or a new process at the packer.

The can wasn't distended, and I had no other sign of anything wrong.

So, I warmed a couple of slices and made a sandwich. No problems.

I put the rest in the refrigerator and ate it today. But something kept nagging at me about that color change & I called Hormel, the maker.

Sure, this is what I should have done in the first place. But I was tired and preoccupied and had had no ill effects over the weekend and it's now Tue. (Their Customer Service line was presumably closed on Saturday.)

Well, the lady at Hormel asked if the meat was more whitish than the usual pink. Yes, it was.
That means that the can probably had a leak and somehing was wrong.

I'd thrown the can out, so couldn't get her the can lot number or whatever she wanted the can for.

That was about two hours ago, and I feel okay, just a little bloating that may be due to having had that meal.

I have a message in to my doctor, who is just back from pregnancy leave, and she should return the call in an hour or so. I hope she can tell me what I might logically fear if the meat was contaminated.
They put a lot of preservatives in Spam, inc. salt . And I did heat it in a skillet. That may have killed some germs.

I did something extremely foolish, and am usually very wary of such things. But the stuff is not deep pink, anyway, and I thought I'd just gotten a production batch that varied in color.

I opened another can, and it is indeed a darker, more definite pink. So, my can was probably not as it should be. Again, it was not swollen, or I'd have been immediately leery.

The reason I'm posting this is to warn you that if you see a whitish or very pale pink in Spam, don't eat it

I hope I'll be okay. I got though the past several days after ingesting the two slices on Saturday, so maybe God looks after fools and I won't be affected. It seems as if anything too bad was wrong,I'd have noticed it by now.

Just a friendly warning for those of you who eat this product.

ANY canned goods can be tainted by a pin hole.

Wish me luck. And be wary of pale Spam!

Glad your on the mend but, and I'm NOT making light on this BUT, STAY AWAY FROM THEIR TAMALES!!!!!!!!!!!!:o:o:o:o;):D

Spam is a great meat product that compliments many foods. I love the stuff, but will be on the lookout for any that is off color.
Army cooks could do wonders with spam.

I opened a can of the low sodium spam yesterday morning and fried a couple slices to have with the eggs, I noticed it was slightly lighter than the low fat spam from the previous can I had and didn't think much about it, thought maybe the difference was low fat vs. low sodium. I had no side effects and it didn't taste funny. I just did a smell test on it and I'm not sure about it so it's going in the trash.

Just amazing what one can learn on a gun forum! Thanks for the heads up.

T-S....I'm glad you're on the mend!! I love spam, and like others here, I fry mine dark, and probably kill any germs that might be lurking within. But I will keep your advice in the back of my mind from now on. Like sheepdawg, I like mine well done, with melted cheese on it, and served in a sandwich using some of the excellent local Italian bread toasted, and with a quality mustard....yummy!! I. Going to the store tonight...ill have to pick up a couple of cans!! (I don't know about that "low sodium" version...I don't think I eat it often enough that I'm going to worry about it).

Hope you are ok, .....

Best Regards, Les

My original post contained numerous spelling errors. That's because I was trying to post before something happened to my long message to eliminate it before I could post. That happens here, fairly often. When that worries me, I post, then try to proofread and make corrections before many read the new post.

I'm not too worried about the 2-3 slices that I ate Sat. I'm worried about the rest that I ate today, a larger amount.
If you were fine on Saturday you'll be fine today

Your first mistake: buying Spam.

Second mistake: eating it.

J/k...if you like it <shudder>. Any
chance it was turkey spam (not to
be confused with a "spam turkey!")?
I tried a can of turkey spam, years
ago, and it was a lot paler, to my
recollection. Still tasted like...spam.

Wow, learn something new everyday. I wasn't aware that a germ
could survive in Spam. Loved it when I was a kid as well as
Vienna Sausauge and hot dogs. Won't eat any mystery meat
any more. I remember in c rations there were 3 or 4 different
things that were spam like and go all I wanted back then.

I grew up on a ranch with no electricity, or refrigeration. We had an underground cellar for storing canned food. We ate tons of Spam, Vienna Sausage, Pork and Beans, and Chili Con Carne.

I can do pork and beans but I wouldn't touch the others with a pitch fork.
