New Jersey is facing a new challenge. A new bill (A655) has been introduced in the Assembly. Under this bill, magazine capacity would be reduced to 5 rounds. This would virtually make EVERY semi-auto handgun illegal in the state. From what I could gleen, there is no provision to grandfather legally acquired magazines up to the current legal capacity of 15 rounds.

The likelihood of this bill passing through the legislature and moving to the incoming Governor to be signed is highly likely!

I lived in NJ up until my mid 20s. The brainwashing there about guns runs deep.

I'm not surprised they are trying everything possible to ban gun ownership. Perhaps this is in anticipation of any National Reciprocity act passing, which would restrict any visitors to a 5 shot snub.

A disgraceful display of treasonous legislation.

NJ - what a surprise. I just moved back from Penn to home after 10 years. I heard a story about once a year of someone getting pulled over and a gun "found" in the vehicle and they came down hard. These were CCW holders, retired and active duty cops. Amazing....

NJ is a great place to be from. It was bad when I lived there and has gotten so much worse in the past few years. If a bill like this gets signed into law retired cops can not carry a magazine over five rounds under LEOSA either. The next best thing would be to carry an eight shot revolver.

It seems like NY and NJ are in a contest to be the most gun restrictive state. I live within a 15 minute drive from NJ. There are places there I would go in both NY and NJ, but I don't and never will until they recognize my license to carry, and that is not going to happen in my lifetime. Well if they do not want my money so be it. I am squire fond of West Virginia and Virginia for vacations.

Don't get too fond of Virginia. Our new legislature has been seated and the gun restriction bills are flowing. They are considering numerous bills that mimic the laws of NY and NJ.

Well that is a bummer to read. I really like trekking in the Senendoah Valley. Being in PA is being in a very unrestrictive "shall issue" State. But we have NY to the north, NJ to the east, DE and MD to the south. None of them recognize my PA license. At least we have WV to the southwest and Ohio to the west. Sure limits the directions I travel out of state. If it were not so damn hot in AZ I would move there.

I received another legislative alert. Seems that another bill has been introduced that redefines an assault weapon. They want to make any semi-auto rifle, pistol or shotgun that has a pistol grip and accepts a detachable magazine, or has a "military-type" feature, an assault weapon.

This is getting out of hand.

It would not only effect handguns,,but common 22semiauto tube feed and clip fed rifles as well as I read it.

Here's the change in the proposed law from 15 to 5 in large cap magazine deffinition. Note that the hi-cap mag is stated to be feeding a semi auto 'firearm':

y. "Large capacity ammunition magazine" means a box, drum,
tube or other container which is capable of holding more than [15]
5 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly
therefrom into a semi-automatic firearm.

Here's is the deffinition of 'Firearm' from the same proposed Law:
(Note that it includes (semiauto) handguns, rifles and shotguns,,as well as air guns??)

f. "Firearm" means any handgun, rifle, shotgun, machine gun,
automatic or semi-automatic rifle, or any gun, device or instrument
in the nature of a weapon from which may be fired or ejected any
solid projectable ball, slug, pellet, missile or bullet, or any gas,
vapor or other noxious thing, by means of a cartridge or shell or by
the action of an explosive or the igniting of flammable or explosive
substances. It shall also include, without limitation, any firearm
which is in the nature of an air gun, spring gun or pistol or other
weapon of a similar nature in which the propelling force is a spring,
elastic band, carbon dioxide, compressed or other gas or vapor, air
or compressed air, or is ignited by compressed air, and ejecting a
bullet or missile smaller than three-eighths of an inch in diameter,
with sufficient force to injure a person.

I know I'll most likely get "picked on". but I'm gonna say it anyway.

Even if the bill was passed it doesn't necessarily mean a ban of "nearly all firearms". It only refers to magazine capacity. Most states already have a capacity limit on hunting rifles, usually 3-5 rounds. Ok, So I replace my stock 10 rnd mag on my SKS and replace it with a aftermarket 5 rounder, now I can go hunting. The 3rd party aftermarket will jump on this and start coming out with a bunch of "workarounds", such as full size mags but only with a 5 round capacity... Then you'll be legal again...

hahahaha... Thank god i live in Texas :p

Georgia is a lovely Free State that many of us that have found very welcoming.

Just seen on the news last night that they have now outlawed "Bump Stocks"
No grandfathering and you must dispose of them. Very stiff consequences if caught selling or having!
The Great State of New Jersey, will never pass through there or spend another dime there again! ;)

Since I carry when traveling, I will never be in NJ.

Sad thing, have a cousin who lives there and loves it. He is not into guns.

A655 only addresses the change in magazine capacity from 15 to 7 rounds, and if I read correctly, it applies to semi-auto pistols, also.

S548 redefines an "assault weapon". It makes any rifle, pistol, or shotgun an assault weapon if it has a detachable magazine and a pistol grip, or a detachable magazine and a military feature.

Neither proposal suggests grandfathering, registration, or the opportunity to modify existing AR-appearing rifles.

Right, standard semi-auto pistols would not be banned by this bill
Mauser "Broom Handle" would be banned
(Don't quibble about "standard")

Text of Bill is here

S548

Provided that A655 does not pass, or if it does, that you can find 5 round magazines. Remember, possession of a normal capacity magazine for when you travel out of NJ would be a felony, punishable by at least 1.5 years in prison for each possessed magazine before being eligible for parole or probation, and PTI is not available.

Of course we can add California to New York and New Jersey as the States that want to legislate the Second Amendment out of existence. I believe California's new definition of Assault Weapon includes any and all center-fire, semiautomatic rifles with a detachable magazine, regardless of magazine capacity. That would include such old hunting rifles as the Winchester Model 1905.
