Don't get too fond of Virginia. Our new legislature has been seated and the gun restriction bills are flowing. They are considering numerous bills that mimic the laws of NY and NJ.

Most of the anti bills in Virginia failed to make it out of committee.

That is correct. These old hunting rifles need to be registered with the California Department of Justice as Assault Weapons, but how many people who own old hunting rifles, or even newer rifles like the Winchester Model 100, going to realize that these rifles are about to become contraband and need to be registered? I can just imagine some 85 year old lady being arrested for having her grandfather's old Winchester Model 1905 that he used over 100 years ago for hunting deer.

I know I'll most likely get "picked on". but I'm gonna say it anyway.

Even if the bill was passed it doesn't necessarily mean a ban of "nearly all firearms". It only refers to magazine capacity. Most states already have a capacity limit on hunting rifles, usually 3-5 rounds. Ok, So I replace my stock 10 rnd mag on my SKS and replace it with a aftermarket 5 rounder, now I can go hunting. The 3rd party aftermarket will jump on this and start coming out with a bunch of "workarounds", such as full size mags but only with a 5 round capacity... Then you'll be legal again...

I don't know what political seats Virginia has. Do the Democrats outnumber the Republican in the Assembly and Senate? I'm trying to get a feel of how our vote will go. Most likely along party lines. In NJ the Democrats outnumber in seats in all 3 branches.

Contact your representative and be heard. They look at the way constituents think. Basically, if there are more calls, emails etc. in one direction they will probably also go in that direction; but no guarantees.

Sent emails to whoever I could yesterday. My district senator is a Republican and always votes Pro 2A. I made sure he was the first I wrote to and thank him for his support.

We plan to get out next year after our youngest finishes high school. Texas has always been a state we considered. Only been there twice, but I like it, very diverse geography.

It would not only effect handguns,,but common 22semiauto tube feed and clip fed rifles as well as I read it.

Here's the change in the proposed law from 15 to 5 in large cap magazine deffinition. Note that the hi-cap mag is stated to be feeding a semi auto 'firearm':

y. "Large capacity ammunition magazine" means a box, drum,
tube or other container which is capable of holding more than [15]
5 rounds of ammunition to be fed continuously and directly
therefrom into a semi-automatic firearm.

Here's is the deffinition of 'Firearm' from the same proposed Law:
(Note that it includes (semiauto) handguns, rifles and shotguns,,as well as air guns??)

f. "Firearm" means any handgun, rifle, shotgun, machine gun,
automatic or semi-automatic rifle, or any gun, device or instrument
in the nature of a weapon from which may be fired or ejected any
solid projectable ball, slug, pellet, missile or bullet, or any gas,
vapor or other noxious thing, by means of a cartridge or shell or by
the action of an explosive or the igniting of flammable or explosive
substances. It shall also include, without limitation, any firearm
which is in the nature of an air gun, spring gun or pistol or other
weapon of a similar nature in which the propelling force is a spring,
elastic band, carbon dioxide, compressed or other gas or vapor, air
or compressed air, or is ignited by compressed air, and ejecting a
bullet or missile smaller than three-eighths of an inch in diameter,
with sufficient force to injure a person.

A 1905 does NOT have a protruding pistol grip or adjustable buttstock therefor not classified as an AW. I get to keep mine without registration.

I heard NJ, where I lived until 2010 is going to legalize recreational marijuana this year. In Georgia that puts you in jail. In Georgia I can walk around with a suppressed machine gun. In NJ a bayonet lug puts you in jail. Same country.

Not really. In GA we honor the Constitution which makes this the state in the United States. Other places, not so much IMHO.

I live in NJ and was born here.
I'm a member of a long established gun club , founded in 1914 I think .
I target shoot and plink and generally like guns.
Always have.
If kids keep on walking into schools and shooting people there is no way that gun bans will be avoided.
If every one was as responsible as my friends at the gun club things would be different , but as it stands I'm afraid that the anti gun folks are going to win out.
If the NRA can formulate some sort of statement that resonates with the non gun owning public and advances a plan or some sort that doesn't rely on the lone madman escape clause , its all over.
The situation is critical and I am at a loss .
I have read everything that the NRA prints about the situation and I don't see that changing the fear of the non gun owning citizens who do not participate in shooting sports.
I fondly remember the days when gun ownership was not a polarizing political statement.

Well that is a bummer to read. I really like trekking in the Senendoah Valley. Being in PA is being in a very unrestrictive "shall issue" State. But we have NY to the north, NJ to the east, DE and MD to the south. None of them recognize my PA license. At least we have WV to the southwest and Ohio to the west. Sure limits the directions I travel out of state. If it were not so damn hot in AZ I would move there.

MstrGuns.... they do have air-conditioning in Arizona as well as Rino's J. McCain and J. Flake. Ya might consider Texas or Wyoming to name just a couple.

I think the biggest problem in NJ is most people don't care if these laws are passed because they are not shooters. They just can't relate. I also think if you polled the residence most would say they don't care if you own a gun; it is not an election issue to them. If these laws came up for a vote in a referendum they would be defeated because only those interested in the issue would come out and vote.

I left NJ in 1972 when the construction boom ended because of the gas crunch back then ..

Was the best thing I ever did .. since that time the laws of NJ have become more and more restrictive to a free society !!!
