Chiefs Special 9mm

I thought that the Value Line guns had different dovetails? Or was that just for the rear sight?

The front sight of many of the Value Line Series is different, with a wide, thin sight base (908/910/457). The CS Series uses the normal dovetails for the front and rear sights, but the rear sights ride on top of the slide instead of having a milled out area in the rear.

So what is the difference between the "S" "C" and "D" models?

A follow up question what, if any, difference is there in the recoil springs?

Here are my choices in springs:

Smith & Wesson Recoil Spring Inside S&W CS40C, CS40D, CS40S, CS45C, CS45D, CS45S, CS9D

----OR-----

Smith & Wesson Recoil Spring S&W CS9C, CS9S

What makes the "D" take the same spring as the .40 and .45 ?

I realize that at least 1 major vendor seems to sometimes mix these things up, but the CS guns only have 2 recoil springs, and they're broken down by caliber.

The 9mm models, meaning all versions (C, S & D models,) use a red spring, SW factory part number #26321000.

The .45/.40 models use the same green spring, S&W factory part number 26331000. Yes, the factory parts list will add the description "inside" after "recoil spring", even though there's only ONE recoil spring (and not a nested pair like the inside/outside recoil springs used for the compact .40/.45's).

I remember asking a couple of the factory LE parts/support guys why they were listed that way, and they basically just sighed and said that somebody else wrote the parts lists and sometimes things slipped by the editing. (Much the same explanation I used to receive when asking about reversed pics or typos in armorer manuals, comes to that. ;) )

If you get a red CS recoil spring, it's for the CS9, and if you get a green CS recoil spring, it's for the CS45/40's.

"C" Carbon Steel slide with black anodized alloy frame.
"S" Stainless Steel slide with silver anodized alloy frame.
"D" Double Action Only Carbon Slide with black anodized allow frame.

As far as I know the "D" is the only one with the letter stamped on the frame. My stainless gun only says CS9 on it.

Thanks to you both, that clears it up.

So what about the different model designations?

Some of the CS series were available in a handsome two-tone variety. My CS40 in two-tone and sporting Big Dog grips.

My current compact 9mm is a 908S, but I've been thinking about and halfway looking for a CS9.

You did what??????
Yep. I went back to a little shop in CT where I had picked up a 457S previously (16 months ago) and had found an ANIB 6946 that was wildly over-priced. The problem was the the shop owner had over-paid for it, but he felt he could still make money on it.

Fast forward to today and I was back in the area, so I stopped by. Bottom line is that he had given up on the big profit and was ready to deal. I made my offer and he accepted. :D

It was no bargain, but you know that I love these DAO 3900-series and 6900-series guns, especially when ANIB.

So now my Python and my pre-lock Model 19-something dreams are back on hold. :( Time to sell more plastic guns! :p

Good thread.....
When my agency left the M1076 about 1999, it was replaced by two models, the M4566 for uniform and the CS45 for Investigations.
I was in the latter at the time and had good results from the CS45 and my scores were always high-90's to 100.
It was never comfortable to me though. Chunky-squarish, and having large hands it just never felt right.
My last few years before retirement I went back to a Field Op support role and knowing I'd get whatever I was issued given to me at retirement, I gave up the CS for a new 4566.
The 4566 has always been 100% also and shot it as well, if not a little better.

Within about 6 months of my retirement in 2008 they adopted the M&P .45.

I dithered on an instate 6046 until someone else grabbed it. I like the DAO configuration, but wasn't sure I wanted another range/safe gun.

Oh well, I hope something nice comes along at that shop north of Boston in time for tax free weekend.

Unfortunately, the local pickins are mighty picked over these days. Not much interesting out there as of today. The "good stuff at good prices" disappears awfully fast. :o There is that NIB Model 411, but the tagged price is too high to justify. I did find an old .32 Hand Ejector out in Brookfield that I need to research, but I won't have time before tax-free weekend rolls around. I keep hoping a sweet 4" pre-lock Model 19-something appears in time, but that is highly unlikely. :)

Well, over a year since I posted this thread, I am still using my CS9s. In fact, I am getting ready to upgrade the sights on my early production black CS9.

My stainless CS9 still gets carried a lot. Especially when its miserably hot and humid.

But with the inclusion of the TercGen grips and suitable carry gear, my CS45 gets carried more often than the CS9s. My preference for 45 as my chosen defensive round figures into the equation as well. Yes, the 9mm is deadly again - according to the Famous But Incompetent - but the laws of physics are immutable. ;)

The CS45 and I had a rough start and I almost sold it a couple of times. But thanks largely to TercGen, it has become my most carried gun over the last 18 months. Regards 18DAI

I sent my CS9 off to BMCM to work his magic . Went through and changed the sights . I couldn't believe it the first time I shot it , that thing is magic . It'll outshoot , at mid range , most of my 9mms . If you want to get the most out of it , send it to Bill .
