Burglary last night

To my great surprise, this evening I got a call from California Highway Patrol informing me that one of my stolen handguns was recovered in a crashed stolen truck......apparently the driver isn't talking much.....

At least it was not used in a crime that I know of.....One down, 10 to go....

Any California forum members familiar with the process of returning stolen property i.e. firearms? Will my M&P get destroyed? Does CHP ship back to Billings PD?

Thanks to all for your thoughts and feedback!!

From what I've seen it can be a crapshoot. There is a form to fill out. calguns.net would be the place to find the details.

Did this burglary occur in Montana or California? If California I hope you can recover your property but I think it is far from an automatic thing.

Well, there's the whole "retained for evidence" time delay to get through first.

I had to get a gun out of CA that had fallen out of the packaging while being shipped from CO to NV. I know, but DHL ship to NV through San Bernardino. I had to pay an outrageous CA FFL fee and shipping and another transfer fee at this end. I was out over $100 by the time it was all done.

Montana

The burglary was at my residence in Billings Montana.....first gun was recovered in California after the driver fell asleep at the wheel in a stolen vehicle, my M&P 9mm Pro was found in the wreckage.

CHP has assured me that it will be returned after trial is done. Same with Billings PD.

The driver has a long record here in Montana and has a grocery box full of felony charges. In 2017 was convicted of vehicle theft and Breaking and Entering at the tender age of 20.....And he was just turning his life around...

Dad's service revolver was found several nights ago in a drug bust. Maybe some will roll over and lead to the recovery of others

2 down 9 to go!

My money is on the driver from the wreck being in on the original theft. The Billings connection is big. Unfortunately while many things that effect the rest of the world don't make it in Montana the drug problem did. Driver fell asleep or nodded out from heroin?

Guy probably dumped the guns to a drug dealer or traded them off himself. One thing about guys like this is they almost all eventually stick their foot in it. 2 so far in about 5 weeks. At this rate they should all show up in about 6 months or so. Maybe sooner if they squeeze the guys they already have hard enough. Good luck.

Had a revolver stolen from my car, parked in my garage. That was January 2017. Gun was recovered in a drug arrest about 40 miles from my home. Still waiting for the PA State Police to return the gun. Numerous calls to the station where the gun is held over the last three and a half years have gone unreturned.

Very sorry to hear you were violated like this. I hope they find them all and that you are able to recover them. You may have to stay diligent to do so. I would ask about case numbers for the criminals so that you can follow up when the cases are cleared and then perhaps get the pieces back.

I suggest a letter to the PD from a attorney. No response a filing in the local court should do it.

Tools in the garage, guns in the house. It should not have to be that way, but it is. This is at least the third post here in as many months about a large number of guns being stolen from the garage. At least once from an LEO. I am sorry about your loss, and hope that you recover them, but I would not keep them in the garage anymore.

Update:

Yesterday I got a call from Billings PD that another of my stolen firearms has been recovered in Texas as a result of another car crash.....the firearm is in Billings PD Evidence bldg, and I can recover it tomorrow.

Texas must have different rules for handling of evidence. Montana and California said they must hold until after trial.

3 down 8 to go!!!

If you are not getting your calls returned, and they are still holding your property after 3-1/2 years, I would suggest you contact your Governor's office, and or your representatives in the Pennsylvania General Assembly, and ask them to make inquiries...I'll bet their calls get returned.

What we learned after going to the state police office is that the arrest involved 10 suspects in a drug ring and it is now a RICO, federal case... I guess the feds move slower...

Let's defund the police. Ya right.........

Glad to see that the guns are filtering back. Obviously since they made California and Texas, they were put in the wind and sad to say, I doubt all of the buyers will crash their cars and forfeit your stolen property.

Going forward, I would place a safe in the basement and add alarms and cameras. The newer camera systems will dial your phone and show you real time photos even if you are away from home. Before my divorce, I had a hidden room in my basement off of my workshop with the door concealed behind a hinged piece of pegboard. I even had tools hanging on the pegboard.

Whatever you can do to make access harder only works to your benefit. Obviously knowing family members have to be sworn to secrecy and my two girls were schooled to NEVER talk about my room to anyone.

Worked for me.

I lost 5K cash from my car once so I feel your pain. The pain in your gut eventually goes away but is never forgotten.

This is a real bummer and I too am sad for your loss.

Besides my safe (okay I get it, safes can be defeated) I also have a computer file with serial numbers and photo's of each gun as well as any other gun relevant description item.

One of my cop friends said, "Help us, help you ... Keep good records" and that just makes sense. Doesn't hurt from an insurance standpoint either.

Good luck
