Okay, I know there's some old timers here and I need your advice. I'm 72 years old and I had all my upper teeth pulled several years ago and had a set of upper false teeth made.

The dentist told me my lower teeth needed two permanent bridges replaced that would cost over $8,000.00 -$10,000.00 each.

I would never go for that but my question is to you older guys in the know, if I had all my bottom teeth pulled, would the dentist be able to match the bottom false teeth to the false top denture I have or have to make a new one to match and replace both?

I know this is a little complicated but what do you old timers think?

If your dentist is building a bridge he should be making a mold of your uppers so that your bite matches. I hate all dentists so I won't mention the exorbitant prices they get away with charging!

If you can go back to the dentist who made the uppers he/she should be able to match the lowers to the uppers. If you've got "Dental Works" or a similar place nearby you can get a full set for less than $2,000.00 and they may be able to match your uppers as well.

*Note: Be prepared for problems with the lowers because they never stay put as well as the uppers do!

A salesman for a large multifaceted firm goes to the company banquet due to his great sales year. Just before he sits down to a beautiful prime rib dinner, he grabs a handful of nuts and bites down on a extremely hard nut, breaking his upper plate. He starts moaning, thinking that finally his luck had turned, was about to be rewarded with a wonderful meal and now this, a broken plate.

The gentleman sitting to his right over hears the salesman's distress and asks, "What's wrong, buddy?" The salesman explains that is going to be the best meal he has had in months and that he just broke his upper plate. The gentleman reaches into his jacket pocket and offers the salesman an upper plate. The salesman tries it and says it is too narrow. The dinner companion takes out a second plate and offers it to the salesman. This time, the plate is too long. The gentleman takes out a third plate and offers it to the salesman. This plate fits perfectly.

The salesman beams and says, "I guess my luck is getting better after all. I break my upper plate as I'm about to feast on a prime rib and it turns out I'm sitting next to a dentist, that has an upper plate that firs better than the one I broke!"

His dinner companion says, "Oh, I'm not a dentist.

I'm an undertaker." :D

EEEEEWWWW!

I've had full set of dentures since 1986. Anyone that threatens to bust my teeth, I just hand them to him then shoot.

I had a tooth pulled last year. An implant was around $6-$7K and a bridge about 1/2 that. I would shop around.

Shop around for dentists. If You still have some lower teeth, dentures shouldn't be a problem. If You have no lower teeth, then implants with snaps in the dentures are the way to go. Implant studs are anywhere from $600 to $2500 each depending on the dentist. Thats why I say shop. And You can shop online. Shouldn't have to pay more than 6 to 7K total with implants and no more than 3K without.

Thanks for all the input gents!

I've had teeth problems since my 20's which is probably genetic since my parents had lost their teeth in their 30's. My dad just had all his teeth pulled except for his lower incisors and lived with it for the rest of his life eating soft foods.

My mom had dentures made but of course in those days they left a lot to be desired. Later in life she had another set made but still experienced discomfort.

I had many so called "permanent bridges" installed when I lived in L.A made for my uppers but after awhile, they all eventually fell out. I got sick of it and finally went to a dentist here.

I live rural and don't have many choices with dentists like some of you folks have in big cities. I went to a dentist here that was recommended and she pulled my remaining upper teeth out and what a trial!

She then went through all kinds of fittings with the hard wax or whatever it is to match my lowers. When the upper dentures were finally ready, they were very loose. She told me I needed to use over the counter denture glue or paste or adhesive or whatever it's called and gave me several samples to try.

I thought I was destined to use this stuff forever and was okay with it but it didn't work as advertised. My new upper dentures kept falling out no matter what adhesive I used.

I came aboard here and asked what glue I should use to keep my dentures in place. I received some advice on denture adhesives but some said if I had a good dentist I shouldn't need any adhesive at all if the dentures were fitted correctly. GOOD AVICE!!

I went back to the dentist and said I wanted the dentures fitted correctly without adhesive and I actually put them on the counter and said they were unacceptable. She was very upset but said to come in.

She set me in a chair and started taking more and more molds of my bottom teeth that lasted what seemed forever. She said to come back the next day and took more molds. When she was done, she said the new uppers would be done in a couple weeks.

When I was called back a couple of weeks later, the uppers were done. They were a revelation! No more adhesive! You guys were right! I'm just glad I didn't except her recommendation from the start that I needed to use adhesive every day to keep them in and I thank you guys who told me if I didn't I had a good dentist.

Anyway, I only have the original lower incisors on my bottom teeth and all my lower molars are "permanent bridges" but are "sketchy" at best.

Again, thanks so much for all your invaluable inputs here gents!

Muley Gil, I guess that's a funny story but why take my thread drifted to you instead of what I asked? That's the problem called "thread drift" that's so prevalent nowadays. No problem brother but you should start your own thread instead of invading mine but it's okay.

The question on them matching would be worth asking your dentist or whom ever you use and getting them to guarantee that while gong you an estimate. I can promise you if you do have the lowers made you will really want to consider getting the implants, the lowers don't have the plate and suction hold of your tops and while it cost a bit more it is definitely worth every penny to get the implants as it gives the lowers a base and platform to sit on which adds strength while you chew. You also don't have to mess with adhesives. It also stops bone loss that can happen when you have all your teeth extracted. The implants provide a base and also help the bottoms sit better making them more attractive and not as noticeable.
Basically the lowers sit on them verses sitting on your gums, it is the way to go for sure.
I would think that the dentist that made your uppers should be able to match your lowers, however I would be hesitant on using them if they had that much trouble making your uppers fit correctly. While fitting and modifying is very common the top plate shouldn't take that much effort for them and should be done in a day or 2 at the most.
Some places offer dentures but either don't get enough or have the experience to be excellent in their work. You should find somewhere that knows what they're doing even if it requires them making you another top so they match and more importantly fit together.
Good luck to you, it is a lot to learn and guess at as you never really know until you do it. There are a lot of videos on YouTube with people that have gone through the same thing you are and you can really learn a lot on there about this subject.
