Why the Philippines Has Lots of Guns But Few Mass Shootings

"Incredibly violent past?" Only as the Hollywood propaganda machine portrays it.

Then the 620,000 Americans killed in the Civil War, more than WWI, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam combined, wasn't violence? Civil War Casualties | American Battlefield Trust

And that violence continues on Mindanao and in the Sulu Archipelago. It also continued throughout the Dueterte regime's extrajudicial killings.
I challenge anyone to name a country that DOSEN'T have a violent history.... It's how **** was done back then.

Well, in the R.P they are patriotic, and love their country regardless of its faults and are not taught that their country is evil and that other Pinoy's are bad and racist. And while there is a lot of violence its not random- its directed.

They learn Christian based ethics in school from a early age they respect their parents and elders. And are taught right from wrong, good from the bad- in school and from their families. They were not taught to try to get something for nothing.

They did not "Spare the rod and spoil the child." As medieval as that sounds now it seems to have worked

They believe in their traditional culture and think that the Pinoy way of life is good. Their is corruption but there also is the rule of law and it is fast and swift in most cases.

I was there in martial law times and there were guns but not as many as now the bad guys always had them of course. Citizens were at the mercy of the bad people the criminals who got illegal guns and used them. I am glad the good citizens now have the right to bear arms as free people.

Martial arts were serious stuff FMA,CMA and JMA. I knew a Chinese man who speared a robber who was trying into bust into his Chinatown building. I knew a Arnis guy who had his fingers chopped off in a sword fight. Martial arts was all the regular guy had for self defense- so many were into it..

They do have cases of ''Amok" but its rare.

If you insult someone, a insult is given, there won't be a lot of talking someone will be on the ground very fast and might not get up. They don't talk a lot when they feel wronged.

Mass killing for nothing would be waling hiya "without shame" no honor- a despicable cowards action and even a crazed person in the R.P. would be repulsed by that.

There are NPA/Islamic terrorist actions but those are political directed.

Not saying is has not happened or won't happen but it is very rare. (Random shooting.)

That's that old way in the islands from 40 plus years ago I'm sure it has changed a lot now and probably not for the better. jmho

Ugly Hombre, that's. my experience with the Philippino immigrants who make up 75% plus of my church. Strong sense of family and care for elders. Men's fellowships at the shooting range. Shooting into a crowd that might include somebody's lola would be suicidal.

Interesting footnote: the Rock Island in RIA is Corregidor, not the US Army facility of the same name.

I did not know that about RIA thanks- My FIL was at Corregidor and in the march, then Camp O'Donnel. Philippine Scout. Later U.S.A. retired. I was at Clark in the 70's. When I was stationed in Asia in the 80's for about 7 years I would go back to the R.P. every year for a month. Have not been back for 30 years.
Make me sad to see Clark now- not sure I want to.

Clark is in pretty good shape. It a major air hub in the PI, especially for cargo. Officer's family housing is mostly in good shape, with many houses turned into B&Bs for Korean tourists who frequent Korean-friendly modest casinos nearby. Angeles City hasn't done as well.

Added: Forgot to mention that downtown Angeles City has a pretty good Mexican resto - that one and another in northern Zamboanga City are run by OFWs who had worked in Mexico and picked up the food prep skills.

The no Gi's part is what would put a mote in my eye lol. Imo it was a mistake to leave- up to the R.P. Government of course- done deal. I wonder if they have 2nd thoughts? Family still has property there- maybe someday after the Wuhan bug fades more, might try to hitch hike on a MAC/Mat flight to get close and hop in or maybe a embassy re-supply. Retired devils have more time than money. :)
