With twelve straight days of 100+ degree temps Daisy and I went out to check on livestock on our place and our neighbors to make sure they had access to water. I know one stock pond is a dried up mud hole and one of the streams is barely a trickle. My neighbor has a creek that sometimes dries up but it has a couple of pools that turn swampy when there is no flow.

We'd hiked in on foot instead of taking the ATV because I was hoping to get some wildlife pictures around the pools of water on the creek, but by the time we got there I was second guessing my decision because it was very hot and muggy well before noon. Sure enough, the creek was not running and the pools had turned kinda swampy. I was keeping an eye out for critters and watching close for snakes with Daisy trotting along beside me.

As we neared the creek bank Daisy took off headed for the nasty smelling swamp water. She typically obeys my commands quite well and usually does an immediate recall when I call her, but as she took off towards the creek I whistled and yelled.

"Daisy!! Daisy!! Don't you get . . . in that . . . nasty . . . water!" But it was too late.

Smelly or not I think she was proud of herself for finding a spot to cool off.

When we worked our way back home Mrs. Faulkner met us on the front porch. As Daisy went up to see her she said, "holy cow, what is that smell?"

I laughed and said, "that's your dog who has been wallowing in the swamp water. I wonder if those dog-snatching women from last year would have picked her up if she's smelled like this."

"Ugh, she's nasty. You need to take a water hose to her and rinse that smell off."

Well, fortunately, next to playing in the creek, getting hosed off is one of Daisy's favorite things to do. It took liberal application of dog shampoo and I had to rinse a couple of times to get the smell out but she was no worse for wear afterwards.

Had a Cocker Spaniel back in 80's that would sit by the walk in shower. Had the " come on, what are you waiting for" look. Also loved getting dried with wife's hair dryer.
All the Greyhounds would walk or run in dog park pools. Our first , Kara actually laid down with her neck and head out of water. Somebody yelled, " hey look it the Loc Ness Monster!" Everybody laughed as it did look like the blurred pics of Nessy.

One time I took our dogs, including a new Corgi pup for a walk. When we got to a small depression that qualifies as a mini-swamp, all the rest of the dogs went around. The little guy examined the strange new experience, and then dipped a paw in. When he pulled it back out, there was......green stuff hanging from his paw. The expression on his little face was definately " EEEWWWWW".

I had a gelding that loved swimming. He would drag a rider into even the funkiest stock tank and have a roll. I had one incident where a rider was unable to get off and get the saddle off before he rolled in the mud.

Daisy looks like she is having fun.....maybe she enjoys the bath just as much, and this was her way of encouraging you to bathe her?

Sometimes a dog has just got to do what comes natural.

If it is not some rank water or mud hole it is a weed on the lawn that takes a good rub for a while, to make them smell like a dog again.

Lets face it, when I was in high school in the men's locker room or football locker
after a hard work out, when you got a whiff of your "All Man" aroma..........
you got a little smirk or grin all over your face, before you grabbed that bar of soap and headed to the showers.

One of a dogs favorite things in life, is smell.

Of course there is the cow paddy also,
but that is a whole different can of worms.

I see that Daisy suddenly became your wife's dog after wallowing in swamp water. :D

I suppose it can be situational. :)

Well, she'll use any excuse to get wet whether in the horse trough, getting hosed off, or running in the creek.

After I got Daisy all cleaned up Mrs. Faulkner let her come in a while to cool off as the temps hit 103 outside. Daisy is not a house dog although she is house trained and she has her own carpet cutout that she lays on when we let her inside.

Cinco, my very own beloved Border Collie, decided a couple days ago to do a full-on body roll and back scratch in a big pile of the freshest, greenest bear poop you ever saw. He was very proud of his fierce new aroma. Long hair and all, there was some cleaning to be done. He is now back to black and white, mostly. :)

Gracie, my springer spaniel, loved to swim. Any time we were near water she was in it. One time I turned around and couldn't see her. Then I spotted her head just above the water line in the small patch of open water in a pond that was 90 percent covered with ice. She had a good long swim, climbed out and continued our walk like nothing happened.
Sadly, we had to say goodbye a couple of weeks ago. She was 14. Miss her every day.

I have a 22 rifle that acts like a dog. It gets awfully upset when I clean it. Won't settle down and shoot until it gets dirty again.

Years ago I hunted down by the border and one of the ranch sheep dogs would go after every skunk around . He was very proud of his new perfume and would want to rub on you so you could enjoy it with him. It was more cover scent than I could stand but I believe it worked as I saw some good bucks after one of his rubs.
