Grocery prices

Last week, one local chain had choice sirloin for $6.99 a pound. It was extremely tender.

Most times, these low prices are low leaders. They get you in the store & then hope you go ahead and buy the rest of your groceries there since you're already in the store.

Did something tonight I haven't done in years. I bought a box of hamburger helper at the discount out of date store. 75 cents. Cooked up 8 ounces of burger. 1/2 of normal. Wife and I ate some for din-din.Was it great? Nah but filled the hole. Guess I can go another 35 years before I do it again.

My ex-wife cooked her first meal... Hambuger Helper and tuna. It wasn't bad considering some of the concoctions I've dreamed up over the years.

Grandson wanted chicken and rice. I went by the local grocery and chicken thighs were $4.68 a lb. Bought a pork loin for $1.99 a lb. I am enjoying the 1/2 beef I bought last Oct for $3.67 a lb cut and wrapped.

Boneless and skinless chicken thighs are about $3.49/lb here. Drumsticks and thighs (skin and bone on) are $1.99/lb.

My freezer is stocked.

Yep... eggs went over $5/dozen here. My daughter has some layers but not enough to keep us in eggs.
I need to see if zoning will let me have chickens in the back yard. Figure as long as I keep roosters out of the flock the neighbors should be good with it.

The shrinkflation bothers me more than inflation. Shrinkflation hides the amount of price increase, and it is insulting that they think I won't notice.

It might just be me...

Bought a 64oz jar of Skippy's crunchy peanut butter. The size hadn't changed but the quality sure did. Might've been the equivalent of one airline bag of nuts in the whole jar.

Given how long it has been since the airlines served nuts...;)

Smart shoppers know how to save money and also when to "bite the bullet". Some items I wont do without but pay for them by saving elsewhere.

There isn't a piece of meat that a slow cooker or pressure cooker can't tenderize.

Big mistake a lot of people make is buying for one meal at a time. I plan on getting close to a weeks worth of meals from whatever I buy.

Most prepackaged stuff is now just empty calories with little nutritional value. Another form of shrinkflation. Less food 'packaged' into more filler.

This is what people voted for.

LOL Nobody voted for higher corporate profits. Look at the record profits being reported by all the major oil companies and grocery suppliers. If big oil says the price per barrel is $120 , it is $120, and the price of gas and diesel goes up. Yet the oil comes out of the same holes, using the same labor it did 2 years ago Production is down 4% but then so is consumption. How is that a shortage? The price of beef at the feed lot never went up, but Tyson profits sure did. Wheat, corn, and other raw commodities are the same as 2-3 years ago, but the grocery supplier giant Nestle SA profits are up 41.77% over 2020. Ask yourself, just how did the government cause them all to make those record profits????? Because that is where most of the inflation actually came from.

I bought a whole beef cut wrapped and frozen. Rib steak or burger it is all right at $4 a pound. I have 6 hens and one hen duck and get about 180 eggs a month from a $17 bag of chicken feed. In the spring I have a small green house and a nice garden. I buy stuff like spuds, corn and onions and wheat directly from the Hutterites. They have all the dairies around here to.

A lot of small meet processing plants have started up in Montana.

I figure that since I recently purchased a LNIB Registered Magnum for $300, that, I can afford to buy myself a nice ribeye steak. But I would be lying on both accounts.

Well, kinda did. We've had very stable income producing investments that have varied very little over time in the capital gains and dividends that they distribute to us. The last distribution at the end of December was not even close to anything we've seen before. It was 2.5 times larger than the historical norm.
I can only guess it's trickle down from price gouging.

Have you noticed the the stores flyers do not put in the egg & prices?
At least in the five flyers that I get every tuesday, in the mail.

some of the replys put a smile on my face. while waiting @ self-check out today, guy finished, walked away to leave, noticed 3 bags on the stand. called him 3 times, 3 other people also called him, then i knew he was mute. someone tapped him on his shoulder and pointed to me, i showed him the bags. 1 bag had a dozen and a half eggs, cheeses. when he took his bags, and waved, 3 persons from different sides of the checkouts expressed thanks for helping the guy. it's nice to see people smile.
