OK, I really didn't want to start a political discussion but the Florida Open Carry proposal has me in a quandary. Let me first baseline my position: I am a staunch defender of the 2nd Amendment; I have been a CCW permit holder since 1995; I realized that I needed handgun training and have taken personal defense courses; I have a wide collection of firearms, both vintage and modern; I belong to a local Rifle and Pistol Club and occasionally compete; I routinely shoot at my son's state-of-the-art gun store & range; I am an NRA RSO.

So what is my quandary? I'm not sure that Florida citizens should be allowed to Open Carry a firearm without a background check or any required training. I have seen way too many new gun owners and CCW permit holders that have never taken any firearms training courses, rarely if ever go to the range to shoot, and barely know how to operate or clean their firearms. That's scary enough, but now we're talking about letting anyone strap on a handgun or carry a rifle/shotgun in public. For what purpose? Do they just want to be cool and show off just because they can, or do they think that openly displaying their weapon will deter criminals? Openly carrying a firearm may make that person the criminal's first target! And do they understand firearm retention?

My wife, who is a CCW permit holder, an occasional shooter, and who accepts my penchant for firearms, is totally opposed to and afraid of open carry. She knows that there are a bunch of borderline "nuts" out there, and who knows what may result from passing this Florida legislation. I realize that there are many other states that allow open carry and their statistics show that most of the fears of violence are totally unfounded. Back in the day I openly carried a handgun when fishing or hunting, and I had a shotgun in the back window of my vehicle- but it was legal back then and times were different. But this is modern Florida...we have daily shootings/murders, growing gang violence, several recent mass murders, road rage shooting incidents, and a constant influx of illegal aliens (some of whom are violent). Am I being over cautious? I guess that I just have to continue to research both sides of the argument and to give this more thought. Opinions?

My opinion is that you should never advertise you are carrying around the general public because you have lost the surprise factor should you need protection. There are stories of people that open carry being the target of theft / robbery of their weapon. I would suspect that most people that open carry "just because they can" are not prepared to maintain possession of their gun should one or more individuals decide to take it from them. Your best bet for assistance in your quest is to contact your state legislators and share your concerns. Regardless of how many "likes" or comments you get here, it will have no bearing on Florida law.

Legal or not, crime ridden area or not, it is my personal preference not to carry opened UNLESS I am on my own land or a friends land in a private setting. In today's crime ridden world of brazen criminals and murderers they would think nothing of knocking you down and taking your gun possibly to be used on you. If they don't do that and they are intent on shooting people, who do you think gets shot first - the man with the gun!

All in all, telling the world you have a gun on you is a terrible idea. I see no advantages and many disadvantages. While it may have been common place to keep a rifle or shotgun in a pick up truck rack back in the day, times are certainly much different now.

So again, no matter what the laws are, I would not open carry outside of my property. But..... that's just me.

People with no training or sense have always carried. The only difference now is that you're seeing it. Criminals will carry no matter what the law says. The law only only trips up those who try do do things right; the blissfully ignorant and evil minded simply don't care.

My take is, if it was a danger to the public to carry without training or a government permission slip, people would be dropping like flies. They aren't.

I can see open carry being beneficial if your concealed gun has become unconcealed and you don't realize it. It would keep you from running afoul of the law in some locations. There are many outdoor activities in Florida that don't involve hunting where I'd like to have an accessible gun on my hip. And probably a gun that is not concealable in Florida attire. Alligators, bears, hogs, panthers, pythons and pirates to name a few.

just spent several weeks in fla. didn't carry often until the daily shootings and car jacks were happening in the area, often in broard daylight! never got pan handled, even though people were posting about it. open carry is allowed in Pa., except during a state emergency. i think like others here on the forum, your makeing yourself a target. just our gray hair might put us on the vandels look twice thoughts!

I personally think intentional open carrying is a very bad idea.
However, one of the main purposes of having open carry laws is to protect people carrying concealed.
In some jurisdictions, for example, if a person carrying concealed on their belt accidentally exposes their gun while reaching for a box of cookies on the top shelf at the grocery store, they can be charged and prosecuted for " brandishing a weapon " if reported.

As for the borderline nuts, they are going to do what they want, legal or not.

If nothing else, open carrying makes some of the questionable people easier to spot.
Realistically, the likelihood of an open carry person who is not already a criminal causing a problem for others is almost non-existent.

Open carry has been and still is legal in Virginia, at least where carry is allowed. I occasionally see open carry being exercised, but it often draws unwanted attention. I prefer concealed, it does not draw unwanted attention and it puts an element of surprise into my corner.
