Issue at COSTCO today

Well first off I'm very sorry about you family difficulties, I hope the future is better!

With that said, my definition of carring a weapon is no one should see it or even think I have a gun on If I carry it right. Only should be found by a pat down or a electronic wand! I do have a little experience carring, started in the early 1970s.

"He was just trying to do his job"

How about this scenario? You go to the store but don't buy anything. Didn't see anything you wanted. As you're leaving the store someone grabs you and flings you up against the wall and while they are holding you another guy starts frisking you.

"What in the hell!!??!???"

"We're sorry sir. We thought you were shoplifting."

Loss prevention officers, JUST TRYING TO DO THEIR JOBS.

Would you put up with that? He was just trying to do his job.

I wouldn't have stopped. I go in the store, I show them my ID card, I walk on by. I no longer have any business with the greeter. If he calls after me, once I have passed him by, I would ignore him.

Off the subject here, but back about twenty years ago LP making arrests was common. I have done so myself. Times have changed and so has the criminal justice system.

LP agents these days are often just told to say nothing and just observe and report like a security guard. Many stores have a no pursuit/no apprehend policy due to the fact that having some knucklehead stealing a $10 t-shirt is not worth that same knucklehead pulling out a gun and turning a misdemeanor into a mass shooting.

From reading your post it appears that the guy asked you loudly if you had a gun. You said no. Pretty much end of story right there as far as I am converned. You are understandably stressed to the max with your child but I think you made a mountain out of a molehill here based on your post. I read and reread it several times and this is pretty much my assessment.
prayers for your child and family, but you need to take a deep breath and let it go.
BTW was in Costco yeaterday-didn't know that they didn't want concealed carry-no signs posted.

Mountain or molehill?

What is your take on this and how it happened?

It may be a molehill upscaled to a small mountain, but I think you handled it well and appropriately. I say this because, though I have tried to be as non-confrontational in public (as appropriate) in my younger years, I am becoming less inclined to be so over the past few years. It seems like individuals and businesses with bad manners are proliferating, or at least bolder in their tendencies. They need to be responded to and the issue managed with a firm hand, which is how I have assessed your reaction.

This happened to me once. I walk up the gentleman and in a low but firm voice I told him it's none of his {expletive} business. Then left the store. That's how I would handle the situation today. Dealing with management is a waste of time.

At that time there were no signs posted. And don't care if there are. In this state, all they can ask you to do is leave.

I don't know the policy in other states, but in Missouri, you don't need a membership at Sam's, Costco, and the like to purchase beer and cigarettes, so back when Sam's was checking cards at the door, and I hadn't taken the trouble to dig out my card, which you have to have to check out anyway, I told 'em I was buying beer and blew on by. My local Sam's has given up on card checking . . .

(Edit: My response to his query would have been "Do you?" or possibly "Why, you need to borrow one?")

Yeah...I always kinda thought..why check for cards. You can't buy stuff without it

OP I think you handled it well.

In the future, consider ignoring him completely if it happens again. You are under no obligation to speak to him once you passed his station. He yelled because his rules say he has to remain at the entrance to check ID, so he could either violate his rule and come after you, or radio it to someone in the store, who you likewise have no obligation to speak to.

I often respond to such questions, "I think that's my business" which is to say, none of his/hers.

I like to say I don't shop at costco because firearm rule, but the bigger reason is I could never recoup even half membership fees in savings on purchases. I know many do, but I get foods at the base commissary which is much less expensive than costco.

I think that folks that open comment on social media, like this forum, that they blatantly disregard signs/signed agreements concerning the carrying of firearms just help the anti gun folks in their quest to ban ALL firearms.

I also think that property owners have the right to make the rules of conduct on their property. Doesn't matter if it is their home or business.

Don't all of you want to be respected of your property rights?

What about the rights of the OP to be approached in a respectful manner?

Until then all bets are off.

I say good for you, Steak. Thank you for standing up for all of us! Handle a request like that properly. That kind of obnoxious disrespectful behavior should not be tolerated.

I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. The guy was just
trying to do his job.

While I, too, agree with CrazyPhil, let's also keep in mind that Steak is not his normal self, that he's very stressed out these days:

...Been going through a real hard time recently with a sick child who is receiving care out of state with my wife right now. They've been gone for over five weeks. He's had issues for 7 years now and it has really worn me (and my wife) down to the bones. Just feeling bad and stressed out so I figured I'd go and walk around Costco just to chill out for a little bit and maybe purchase a few things. Huge fan of Costco and spend a lot of money there over the course of a year. I've never had a bad experience and everything I get from there is top notch....

I'm betting that what many of us perceive as an overreaction is surely due to Steak's unusually high stress.

Steak, I hope that soon your kid gets better, and that you will be reunited with your family.
