The Dark Web

On occasion.
For a hungry mind, it's almost unavoidable to at least stumble upon some corner of it.
It covers a lot of territory. It's not a single place as it's name might imply.
Hell ... even this forum might be considered part of it by some.

I tried to but I couldn't see anything.

It is an interesting place for sure but it is also a bit of a rabbit hole. It's great to be curious but you need to remember to keep everything in context. On the internet there are a lot of people looking to manipulate and take advantage of others. On the dark web, everyone is looking to do that. Just be sure to know how to protect yourself before you take that red pill.

I guess most would call me maybe "overly cautious". Looking for an entry port to the 'dark web', to me, is akin to letting a known shady character into your home and allowing him to see where the gun safe is . . .

I'm just enough computer savvy to be dangerous, and though I'm more proficient than more than three quarters of those my age that I know, I'm the guy who walks around the block instead of taking the shortcut through the alley just in case. To me, the potential risk far outweighs any curiosity or prurient interests. What I don't know about computers could fill a bunch of books, but I does know that when you play with fire it's easy to get burned and the odds aren't in your favor.

There are enough thieves, crooks and scammers masquerading as legitimate businesses, vendors and traders on the main street of the 'normal' web environment to watch out for - with my luck I don't need to go poking around in dark corners.

I don’t even understand what it is. DarkWeb.com?????? How is it different from WWW? Or is it just a reference to certain sites on the web? Does one know when he’s on the dark web?

It's certain sites rather than a portal to the halls of doom.
Our gunsmithing sale and reloading boards might be considered dark by some...
Depends on who's calling it dark web

Generally the Dark Web is a system of servers that bounces your traffic from server to server so that it never appears to come from the same place twice. It throws in some encryption for good measure. The whole point is to keep the real origin of the web traffic obscured. The point is that what goes on there is untraceable. That's why it's become a haven for criminals and spooks. In practice, it is not completely anonymous but it is very difficult to trace anything to the point that they have to really, really want you to go through the trouble.

I am curious about it but not enough to waste time doing any research. Probably someplace best avoided unless you are interested in dope dealing, international terrorism, or pedophilia. There is already plenty of strange content on the regular web without venturing into the dark web,

U413 used to be interesting.
It was a forum similar to this, but on a pocket calculator sort of level.
It was all command line like DOS, not all commands and command modifiers were listed. Hacking the site was not only encouraged, for some boards, it was required.
