Hello Folks,
I’ll be 76 in 3 weeks and went through some health issues this past winter. I had severe breathing problems and went to the hospital and they discovered I had blood clots in my legs that had worked their way up into my right lung.

They said I needed an emergency operation and I agreed and they took out 1/3 of my right lung. I spent 3 months in the hospital and 6 months of recovery. I’m still having some breathing problems after all that but realizing I need to pare down now as I’m older.

Okay, enough of my health problems but I wondered what advice you folks might give me. I have a small collection of pistols, revolvers and a few rifles. Nothing really large but maybe 20 pistols and revolvers and 10 rifles all of these in .22, .38 and 9mm.

I don’t want to list them one by one on Gunbroker or whatever which I know would bring the most profit but would like to sell them as a group. What advice could you good folks recommend? Thanks for any input!

Gebe, I believe that I would send them all to one of the “top dogs” on Gun Broker and let them sell them for you.

Where in the Free State of Jefferson are you located? If you have an online classified(Calguns?) in your area you might be able to see if you can sell a few on your own to get a better price then send the rest off in a group. Or there maybe be a shop local to you that would do a consignment deal for you. Seems like most shops I frequent take a 20% consignment fee. And there are online places such as Durys that will buy whole collections.

Collector's Firearms in Houston is a good outfit to work with and they buy collections and do consignments, and all things firearm related. If you do not like what they can arrange, they may know someone who can. 713-781-1960. You still might want to sell some of your Smith's here where they will get a good home.

Find someone with experience to sell them on GB. Do not offer to pay over a 20% commission. When you find who you need make a good inventory and get the info you need where you can watch them as they are being auctioned. My son does this with collections but we aren't close enough to you to make it work. I am also 76 and my son knows what to do with my stuff when the dirt nap comes. I told him to keep the sentimental stuff in the family and do what he wants with the rest of it. I know several folks our age who are starting to sell stuff, not just guns. Good luck.

My advise is ti sell them right here on the S&W Forum! They do not have to be S&W's. Take good pictures, give honest and accurate description and list them.

Personally, I would not list then on GB! Too much downside these days and the risk of getting scammed, hacked or ripped off.

State of Jefferson... northern Cali?

As others have suggested, find someone to sell them on GB and/or in their store on commission, no more than 20%. It will take awhile.
Selling them here is a good option to, if you are up to it. It takes good pictures, communications, and time. Good people skills are a plus.
Or find a good auction house that specializes in having large gun auctions. That will be quicker, like liquor. Again, be clear with what they are wanting in the way of sellers charges. Good luck.

With your health issues I would seek out one of the Big Dogs and have them handle the lot. Why bother with individual sales and have to go back and forth to an FFL to send them out for you.
Some of the sellers are right here on this forum, they’ll do everything for you, pictures, marketing, etc and they have their name.

Sounds like you had a PE on steroids. You were lucky to survive. I had a PE but not quite as bad in 2020, it went to my lungs. I was lucky to make it to the hospital. One reason I’ll never live out in the boonies, I live near great medical facilities.
Hope you get better.

Gebe, sorry to hear about your health issues. I myself had open heart surgery last year. So I know it's not fun getting old. In any event not to be the devils advocate or anything But selling here yes it's a great idea But it does come with some issues. You will need to have an actual price or asking price, so come up with a price that's fair to you and forum members.
Next you will need an FFl local to you that will ship for you. I've never done this before on any forum myself so I suggest that you look over the forum rules on procedures for selling guns, that's if there are procedures.
I believe these are the main hurdles, but selling here there are many advantages foremost is no commissions to be paid, you have an active collector audience of which you are a member, you have control of your price you can always lower it to move an item, you can sell your guns in groups or batches or individually one by one. Last your guns will go to a good home and you'll make many new friendships here.
Good Luck

All my firearms, related items and reloading equipment is willed to my Grandson.

I agree with Chief. Sell a few at a time but beforehand work out a deal with local FFL to handle the shipping. I’m sure he’ll give you a discount if he knows it’ll be 20 or so transactions. Good luck

I see the reasons to sell as a group but believe that will eliminate many buyers. Make sure that is what you want and understand that the funds to you will suffer more than a 20% commission.
