Cereal and milk

When I was a kid, growing up in the 1950's, I enjoyed a bowl of cereal and milk for breakfast.

As I grew into my teen aged years, I found sleeping late more enjoyable than breakfast, and eschewed the morning meal pretty much until after I retired about 15 years ago.

I went back to the old routine of a bowl of sweetened cereal with whole white or chocolate milk while perusing the Forum, whenever "morning" happens to arise (I love being retired!)

Anybody else do the cereal and milk thing?

John

On occasion, but not very often. I loved sugar-cereal as a kid - though what I got most of the time was "hot cereal" (oatmeal, cream of wheat, malt-o-meal, etc.).

Nowadays I have a bowl of sugar-bomb cereal once or maybe twice a month as a treat. Most of the time I choose a more protein-dense breakfast.

Eggs, cheese, meat - even peanut butter (with cheese) - all proteins that will "stick with me" longer than empty carbs (like sugar bombs).

FWIW, I still can't bring myself to eat "hot cereal". The very thought practically GAGS me....

I eat cereal fairly regularly but no more than once a week. I make a mix usually consisting of raw rolled oats, unsweetened bite size shreaded wheat, oat bran and I sweeten it all with some raisenbran. I'll also add anything else around that sounds good to me. Some cut up fruit of most any kind is a nice addition. For milk I mix up some powdered milk. I generally don't use enough milk to buy fresh besides powdered milk is largely what I grew up on. Dad was a teacher and that was back before unions and at that time teachers really didn't get paid squat. And at that time powdered milk was very cheap. Not so much now.

So you choose powdered milk now, because it was all you could afford, and what you got used to, when you were growing up?

Interesting.

Personally, I wouldn't touch powdered milk with a 10-foot pole. It was all we could afford when I was a little tyke living with my mom's family, and I HATED the taste of it.

But that is probably because when we lived with my dad and his parents on the old family homestead, we had a ready supply of FRESH cow's milk.

When you compare the taste of fresh milk to powdered milk, there is NO contest. Hell, even pasteurized processed 1% milk from the grocery store tastes 10x better than powdered milk to me.

Powdered milk just never tasted right to me.

Powdered milk......now that brings back memories. When I was little my Parents and Grandparents went to Canada a lot to fish and hunt. Where we went everything had to be brought in with you. Nearest store was about 50 miles a way. All I was allowed to drink was milk and water. Since milk would spoil before it would get all drinking, my Mother got Powdered Milk and Ovaltine for me to drink. The Ovaltine was to hide the taste of the powdered milk.

Yeah, if you put enough sugar and chocolate in it I might be able to drink a glass ;)

It’s Kellogg’s Raisin Bran with lactose-free milk for breakfast 2-3 times a week. Alternate with fried or hard-boiled eggs or Quaker Quick Oats with some fresh berries. I’ll occasionally splurge on toast with a slather of peanut butter.

I like cereal but 4 months ago I gave up sweets. I no longer miss them and I have shed 16 lbs.

I am also familiar with Shredded Wheat and Weetabix. Taste wise they nearly indistinguishable.

Texturally they both could pass as scouring pads.

Next time you have the toast, try putting a slice of American Cheese on top of the peanut butter. It adds more protein, and tastes good too!

Never tried that one - yet.
Seems kind of... different...
BUT, we all know EVERYTHING is better with BACON!
Seems kinda' weird to quote my own previous post, but..

I had my first PB&B today.
I toasted two slices of whole-wheat bread, slathered both of them with Adams all-natural crunchy peanut butter, sprinkled them liberally with Kirkland (Costco) bacon bits, and slapped them together to make a PB&B&PB sandwich for lunch.

I have to admit, it was pretty good.

BUT I still prefer putting a slice of American cheese on top of a piece of toast slathered in peanut butter.

To each his own, I guess...

okay, ain't made some for awhile, so back at it. Modified cornmeal self identifying as a cereal. Made it too lean (out of practice), and had to use some butter to crisp it up.
