In the past I've been guilty of buying a firearm just because I had ammo

Can't say I have ever bought a firearm because I had the ammo except that I did so when I bought the M-8 Remington. I bought the ammo for a friend, and he wanted to sell the rifle. I ended up with a rifle and the ammo for about $250.00 IIRC.

Back about 1988 I could have bought a Win M-70 chambered in 458 WIN MAG for $450. I'm still kicking myself for missing that one, but I had lost my job and money was tight. I'm sure you understand.

Ditto

My son in law bought 3 boxes of .357 during the ammo desert. Problem was they're .357 Sig and wouldn't fit in his 686 so he gave them to me.

Shortly after, my LGS had a Sig 229 and a 239 in.357 Sig for descent prices. Already had the ammo so they came home with me. Picked up a couple of .40 cal barrels and added another caliber to my stock.

Guilty as well..

Cheers!

P.S. Still looking for that nice (bargain?) 30/06 to go with those boxes of ammo I "inherited" years back. With a 7x57, a 270 Winchester and some 308s on board I'm just patiently waiting for the right one: already have the RCBS dies to reload.

I purchased a lot of bullet casting items in an estate auction. Inside was a mold for a 44 caliber bullet. I had no 44 caliber guns. Well, I just couldn't let it go to waste. I ended up biding on and getting a Charter Arms 44 special gun. Bam, everything is right in the world.

Bought my 44 mag at least partly because a friend had given me 44 brass. (But I probably would have bought it anyway…)

Does this count?

I had a rifle in .308 Win but traded it off.

Still had a decent stockpile of .308 and 7.62.

Years went by, then one day I bought a Springfield M1A. ...

Goes without saying, as soon as you plan on getting the rifle/pistol, you get the dies if you're a reloader.

Bought a Ruger Old Army after years of searching for a good one. It surprisingly came with a 45 Colt conversion cylinder, for free. Bought a box of 45 Colt Cowboy, tried it in the Old Army, liked it. Then the LGS had a new New Model 45 Colt Blackhawk on sale over $100 off retail. It went home with me.

During a recent Ammo shortage,
I did give some thought to buying a Good Looking LH 17 Cal Savage.
Stainless, thumb hole Laminated stock.
They had bulk boxes of the 17 ammo in stock.

That is how I got started with my BHP that I carried for over 40 years. My carry gun at the time was a 3.5 inch Model 27 when a friend gave me over 4,000 rounds of surplus 9mm ammo. I bought the BHP in 1968 and became fond of it and it wound up my EDC.

Before I was really a gun guy I had someone give me a couple of cases of .38 special....I stopped on the way home that day and bought a .357....but it was a Taurus. I didn't know any better at the time and I lucked out in that it was a great pistol and I still have it......

Funny enough, during covid, I ran into a nice set of 45ACP dies. I intended them as trade fodder. Instead I bought a Glock 21. And another. And a couple of 1911's...

Had that happen to me a coupla times last year and I blame my sister.
We went to the range and took turns shooting her Glock 19 in 9mm, 21 in .45acp, my carry snubby and Lisa's 66-3.

Then she pulls out her Ruger GP100 and a box of .357.......Sig.
I pointed this out to her, she said a bad word and shot some .38Special instead.
Anyway, she gave me the box of .357Sig.
The following Monday, I was on my way to the gym and stopped by one of the gun shops I pass just to see what they had in the cabinet and there I saw a Glock 33 in .357Sig priced below msrp.
I bought it and added +1 mag extensions.

I really enjoy shooting that little beast and it's become my edc pistol.

My sister also used to have an M&P15 but sold it because she shot it once, then just let it sit.
So, she gave me four 30 round mags fully loaded with 5.56.

For my birthday we went to a gun show and I ended up with a Palmetto Arms AR pistol with a 5.5" barrel, Holosun HS510C red dot and SBA3 pistol brace.

I've since added 20 round mags and a 2 point sling.

It's also lotsa fun to shoot.
I have a 1 point bungee sling on order to see how I like that.

Now if only I can find something for all that .22LR ammo I have.....
