In the past I've been guilty of buying a firearm just because I had ammo

I won several boxes of .410 shells in a raffle. A year or so later I traded an old 12 gauge for one of the Rossi Snake Charmer type guns. Makes a good boat gun.

Years ago, I was gifted a case of .25 acp ammo. I am not a big .25 fan, but picked up a Beretta pop up barrel Jetfire to shoot it up. What a reliable and fun gun. Sold it after the ammo was gone, as it just reinforced my lack of any practical use for the .25 acp.

Back in high school I acquired a metal ammo can with 100 rounds of 7.62x51 blanks mounted on a link belt. Still have it, and doubt I will be picking up an M60 to use it up in any time soon.

I did the same. I've had 6 boxes of .25 on my shelf for a few years, came with a bulk ammo buy. Waited patiently til a "decent" used .25 showed up- A nice Beretta Bobcat.
Fun to shoot, and I throw it in my pocket every now and then, along with whatever I'm really carrying!

I'm guilty as well, years ago someone gave me a couple hundred rounds of .22 mag they bought by mistake thinking it was .22lr and so ask if I wanted the ammo but only telling me they were .22s. I said yes then after saw what they were and now I own a rifle and 2 handguns in what's become my favorite small game caliber.

Since I collect old ammo I often get newer stuff as part of a package deal when buying. This has gotten me interested enough to buy a gun in a caliber I didn't already own a few times. 44 special led to buying a Charter Bulldog (seemed wimpy in my 44 Mag, more fun in the Charter LOL), 17HMR made a rifle to shoot it seem like a good idea. Most recently a trade deal got me a bunch of 40 S&W so I bought a police trade in M&P to shoot it. Even worse case, a few years ago I was gifted some 22 Jet brass, at the next gun show I found a Contender barrel in that caliber, two tables over was an RCBS die set. Bought both, went home and loaded the brass, put the barrel on my Contender frame and went shooting!

Been the and done that. Several years ago I bought a very nice condition S&W 20 ga semi auto shotgun simply because I had two and a half cases of 20ga ammo and noting to shoot it up with.
I still have the gun and most of the ammo!

Guilty. Around 1985 I was at a gun show where an older gentleman was selling a bunch of ammo that was "obsoleted" from his shop. I made an offer and owned all of it. There was a new box (maybe it was new when he bought it) of 41 Long Colt, a new box of 44 WCF, around 25 rounds of 32 WCF and some 44-70. While I did pretty good buying the ammo I now own guns chambered for all of those rounds that cost me. I think I gave the guy $60 for all the boxes of ammo.

The .41 Long Colt is the round that got me into reloading, had to feed a .41 Army Special purchase.

At one time I collected Pre64 M70's. I sold most of the collection to finance a 16ga Purdey 2 bbl set. Well I had dies for a 308 brass and bullets but no 308. Last year at a gun show I found a M70 classic fwt. The odd thing is it has iron sights. Not a bad piece of wood either. Figured it would make for a good travel rifle.

I have a Colt New Navy civilian version 4" barrel chambered in 41 Long Colt. Been watching for an SAA or a Bisley in that caliber. Still have not seen one I like.

I don't usually get the ammo first, but am guilty of picking up magazines WAY before I get the matching gun. I think I had M1 carbine mags for 10 years before I got one. That said, a friend recently gave me most of a box of 38 Super, so now I'm going Hmmm...
Goes without saying, as soon as you plan on getting the rifle/pistol, you get the dies if you're a reloader.
Or even before you know what you want ;-).

In the late 80s I bought a Springfield Omega in 10mm and like many other hastily converted 45s of the time it was not strong enough and broke a couple of times. I had a lot of 10mm ammo and components so I bought a S&W 610 revolver to replace it.

Does it have to be ammo?

I bought a .38 Super because I had brass for it. Enough other common reloading materials that I did not have to acquire anything else to reload for .38 Super - just had to acquire a firearm in that chambering. No regrets!

A couple years back I found about 500 rounds of .22 WMR ammo I'd forgot I had. Went the cheap route and bought a Rossi RBM22 and stuck an old Simmons scope on it. Shoots very "meh", so it lives hanging from a nail inside the barn. Reckon it'll kill a coyote if it gets the chance.
