Did the paint thing on Shield

Fine job!

I paint all my weapons and might do the same to my newest addition an M&P 15 Sporster carbine! What else could make your weapon more unique than adding some paint (or nail polish)?

Look at my avatar and see some paint on a M&P 40C against an ugly carpet!

Nice job! Looks Good. I think the gold looks really nice, that's why I used it too.

Good point about the heat. as you can see it needs another coat, them I will test it out Friday on my CCW course I'm taking, to see if it fades with heat

I have been thinking about doing this but haven't because I am concerned about the heat of a range session.
None of my guns have problems with heat and the nail polish I use

All these guns have been fired at least 400 rounds if not more except the Shield40 with about 350 rounds and the M&P40Compact is my avatar and has over 1,000 rounds and it is my EDC but now my Shield40 with the Crossbreed holster has taken its place and the other is a backup, the other two weapons you see are M&P 45's! As you can tell I like the 40 plus caliber weapons myself!

I did the color fill thing with my Shield using an opaque white paint pen. It's grown on me over time... I think it looks better with the color fill!

I notice that you have put a dab of red on the safety, neat idea!

Those all look great! I have been toying with the idea of doing something similar but am a bit apprehensive. Can anyone offer some quick step-by-step instructions for this? It would be much appreciated.

Really looks sharp. By all means, could you guys share the step-by-steps with us?

Yup! Even though I rarely use the safety it seemed like a good fail-safe to insure that I had the weapon off safety. With the slide off it was really easy to get a drop of red paint into there.

The basic process for color filling is pretty easy. I'm told there are three different methodologies for doing color filling:

1. Paint
2. Crayons
3. Nail Polish

I used paint since I got my hands on a set of cheap paint pens.

The process was fairly simple:

1. Clean the area of the frame to be painted. I used 91% Isopropyl alcohol. One of the Youtube videos I found online talked about wiping down the slide with both Mineral Spirits and then with Isopropyl Alcohol. Let the alcohol evaporate and wipe dry using a soft lint free cloth (I used cleaning patches).
2. Thoroughly shake up the paint pen for several minutes and then place a good coat of paint over the engraving.
3. I let the paint set for 5 minutes (it's close to 80F in my house here in Arid-zona so I figured that would allow adequate time for the paint inside the engraving to start to dry.
4. I then wetted a cleaning patch with Isopropyl Alcohol. Using even pressure I carefully wiped away any excess paint from the surface of the slide.
5. I then waited another 5 - 10 minutes and then repeated steps 2 - 4.
6. If any excess paint gets left on the slide, it can be cleaned pretty easily with some Krud Kutter. They sell Krud Kutter at Wally World and it's used to clean off graffiti from walls. Just spray a little onto a clean cloth and wipe the slide with even pressure. If you use too much pressure you'll take the paint out of the engraving.

Here's mine with the gold, with my first test target. I think I'll do the red safety paint like Martimus did as well. His instructions are on the money too BTW.

I use a similar approach except I use nail polish and the process takes no longer than 10 minutes tops:

  • Using isopropyl alcohol degrease the area to be painted
  • Taking a nail polish of you choosing liberally apply polish to the engravings
  • Let dry for a few minutes
  • Using non acetone nail polish remover gently wipe with either a paper towel or cloth rag the excess paint from the area
  • Inspect and if necessary apply more polish in areas lightly colored or missed and again wipe excess polish with nail polish remover

If you want to change colors or remove the polish entirely take non acetone nail polish remover and a Q-tip till it is all gone and you can now repeat the process with a different color or leave it that way if you want!

I haven't done mine yet, but I bought the supplies (iso-alcohol, nail polish, and nail polish remover.)

I was looking over the various kinds and shades of nail polish in the cosmetics area at Wal-Mart (my wife was not with me) and I was getting some strange looks from the women in that area. :p

I buy mine at 5 a.m. so there is little traffic there, but I was looking for the non acetone nail polish remover (supposed to be safe for your guns finish) when there were women around that afternoon after work and kinda got looks but no remarks!

When I noticed I was getting some looks, I started holding up various shades to my nails, and muttering things like "I wonder if this will go with that luscious little frock I just bought." :D

They didn't linger to offer any comments or help...
