I have that same flare gun, but mine is a parkerized dull color, almost green. It fires 37mm commercial or 40mm military flares and smoke grenades - tear gas and other stuff if you are LE. I fired mine a few occasions on July 4th at a local beach - it lit up the sky - lol!

If you do the Destructive Device (DD) paperwork on it, then you can use it to launch grenades or fire all manner of lethal projectiles.

These were less popular than the shoulder fired models, but were used for years in LE (and maybe still are) to launch tear gas rounds into buildings and other hidy holes. Not sure when they first came out, I know that there were gas guns to be had in the Roaring 20s. That's obviously a later model of course.

Yeah! I'm looking for one of those adapters to be able to shoot a 12 ga shell out of it. My son takes my pictures but he just left on vacation.

Hopefully, you're kidding. I don't know if it's the adapter itself, or assembling it into the firearm, but one or both of those makes it into a NFA firearm. If the adapter can only fire 12 gauge flares, that may be different. Go to the ATF NFA website to learn the law before doing anything.

This model is c. mid '70s if I understand correctly.

Yeah, good point, I don't know if the 12 ga. adapter will allow a regular shotgun load!
