I should have caught this prior to trading for the revolver but while cleaning I found "DC-456449" etched on the bottom of the topstrap. My guess would be department of corrections or District of Columbia. The muzzle wear suggests it may have seen limited time in a holster and the recoil shield shows little if any firing. S/N96K0238. The last 4 digits of the S/N are stamped in the inside of the right stock, I thought that this had been discontinued by S&W several years prior to 1980.

Evidence Number for a Criminal Case. At least its on the inside of the top strap.

District of Columbia Driver's License are seven numbers. So I don't think its bubba's drivers license. But I still see people do that to Firearms with Serial Numbers.

Personal identification or evidence number, either way it's an unusual place for that to be placed. At least it is not visible to casual observation.

I wish my powers of casual observation had been keener at the show. Still not a bad example but wish I had examined it better prior to trading.

See if you can look up the case number. If it involves someone of notoriety, you may have a little added value, if not, remove it or leave it as is. I personally would not devalue a gun much for that in that location.

6 digit # is correct for a Dist/Columbia Criminal Court Case.
To look them up however you need to know the yr of the case and also which Div of the Court it went through.
Each div uses it's own 3letter abv in the search process.

Civil Court has it's own separate search .
