I now have both. (I'm the one that posted of pics where I dropped the 6" last week) My question isn't really a technical one, more opinion/application related. Besides the 'ol you can't have too many S-W's rule, what would be a beneficial situation of owning both where one would be more effective than the other? I can carry the 4" easily, theres one. Or if for a suitcase gun the 6" would be better. But wouldn't a 6"-er be better for one of the paranoid "zombies" type deals, or if hunting became necessary? Not a very specific post, slow day...

I'd still stick with the 4" .
Or keep both .
Id say keep both .
One for casual wear .
And one for suitcase wear .
A guy can't be going around looking cheep or gaudy with a 28 . So I say have one for both occasion's .
Thats my fashion take .

I didn't word the OP quite "seriously" enough I suppose. What I meant was do any of you own more than one of the same model w-different bbl lengths and why, other than collecting. Hence what is a good justification for owning both 4" and 6" 28-2.

Hi and congratulations on your purchases.

The difference in velocity, depending on the loads and the weapon, can only be as much/little as 75 fps to maybe 150 fps as to the difference in barrel length. That difference in velocity will make no difference on zombies because they should always be head shot anyhow.

The 4 inch is more handy, depending on your body size, in the woods. Although a sturdy belt and holster will make the 6 inch easy for carry.

A shoulder holster makes the 6 inch easy to carry, if you like that kind of rig.

I am blessed to have a 3 1/2, 4, 5, 6, and 8 3/8 M27-2s....so I think you as well should have one of each in M28s. I have a 4 inch and someday just might have to have a 6 inch.

If you are trying to justify your purchase here's my take. Years ago I tried to justify more than "just" one handgun and since then gave up. I was unreliable in my justifications and now have a bunch.

If you're single, one cannot have too many girlfriends. Same with guns for married guys.

I do. In fact, most of my handguns are variations on the same model. Working on 27-2s right now. I have Ruger Blackhawk .44s in 4 different barrel lengths. My shorter barrel guns I'm more likely to carry if I'm also carrying a rifle while hunting or just woods loafing. The longer barrels if I'm hunting with handgun only. And I was serious about a particular gun being sighted for a particular load. That's the way I do it, anyway.

I have 3 and 6.5 inch model 29's and a 4 inch 629. The 3 inch I find to be poorly balanced so it doesn't get used hardly at all and the 6.5 inch is just too big for anything but hunting. That leaves the 4 inch which is about ideal for anything I need a handgun for.

I got my first 28-2 last week. 6", and traded for a 4" 28-2 yesterday. Still looking, I love the Highway Patrolman.

My thoughts...if you own more than one gun, make sure they are all good ones.

I have quite a few Smiths.

I have Model 66's in 2.5, 4 and 6 inch - and don't feel at all badly about it.

In the process of getting a 4" Pre 28 - so I suppose sooner or later I will need one in 6".

And I have a 586 and 686, both inch 6". Great for targets at Bass Pro indoor range. Cool in the summer, warm in the winter. I'm old.
But not too old for the 29 in 61/2 and 629 in 6". I can put on a show for the tourists.:D

Seriously, and all Zombies aside, how can you figure out which barrel length you prefer if you don't live with them for a while?

Personally, I will now only buy 3" and 4" revolvers. That's just what I like best. Nothing wrong with other lengths, just my preference.

I came to that conclusion only after owning / shooting other lengths.
