I know it's hard to pinpoint, but looking for ballpark figures for a 4" 29-2. S serial # puts it at late '64-early '65 date according to Standard Catalog. Excellent condition, it's been fired but not much, just a couple of tiny nicks on trigger guard. Original case with goodies. Not that it adds any value, but belonged to William Sharp, who was the gunsmith at Chicago's Klein's Sporting Goods in the 60's. You can google what he did.

If that gun still has the original cokes or checkered diamond target stocks, it is worth at least $1500.

Saw it at a small LGS. He's asking high teens and I thought it was high, but it's a beauty and I can't get it out of my head. I have some trades that might make it more palatable, just looking for opinions. Don't know the guy very well and how much he'll deal.
Also has a vintage box of S&W 44 mag ammo.
Never hurts to ask if he will deal or take trades. To me, the high teens are on the top end of the scale, but maybe you can get it down to a price you like. Good luck!

Around here in Virginia, high teens is not going to fly. Fifteen maybe if it is super clean. And then it is likely to sit a while. You say a couple of nicks on the trigger guard. That is going to even make fifteen bills a stretch around here.
Wait long enough and you will likely get it as there are only so many of them out there. But around here you will wait a while for fifteen bills or more.

i have seen current prices of the 6 1/2 29-2 approaching $2000 . One unfired example asking price is $2500. I have seen prices on G.I. increase average of 35% since last year. Gun Broker is nuts too. I check prices on 27s and 29s constantly. I cant afford to buy today what i could buy last year
I talked to a guy on GI yesterday about a gun that was priced to high, and not as represented. He did not care, he wanted full list he said which was 300 too much.
The economic effect of the COVID 19 virus has not hit yet. At least not full scale. Dealers will be sitting on this stuff for a long while. Being unrealistic in pricing for generic models will put no food on the table

You didn't say if it's nickel or blue. That might make a difference to some.
I can only say that when I see one I really want but decide to wait because the seller is asking too much … when I go back later it is usually gone.

I've been waiting for prices to fall on account of this Covid BS too, but so far it hasn't really seemed to happen. Still appears to be a sellers market for firearm related goods.
The shop is only open Thurs., Fri., and Saturday right now due to this lockdown so I'll probably head back later this week to dangle some trades in front of him if he still has it. Used big bore S&Ws are pretty uncommon around here in shops.

Ive taken a vacation from Smith and Wesson purchasing and price watching. I thought it was just me. Im glad the experts are seeing what I thought I was.
FWIW, I picked up a 4" blued 29-2 about a year ago for $1150. ~1972, no box in very nice condition. It was the first one I'd seen for sale locally for nearly two years and I thought I got a pretty good deal.
When you say "original case" does that mean the box, or presentation case?
Either way, $1500 doesn't sound like an unreasonable price.

your right,they asking crazy prices. They leave them at those high prices,and little by little,other sellers follow suit.Thats what makes older Smiths a great investment right now. Once the prices go up up up,its hard to go back down
From what I have been selling, the high end stuff is going up too.

I sold a 4" 29-2 about 2 months ago. I would rate it in the low 90% range. No box or goodies. Serial # started with N, not S. I let it go for $750. The buyer agreed to pay $800, but I gave him a discount because he was a young Detroit cop. My Dad was a retired cop and he passed away in March - I guess I was feeling sentimental.
