.38 Special non hollow point loads for a 4"

I bought 5 cases of Privi .38 spl “standard pressure” loads back in 2019 when it was reasonable @$129/500. It is listed @904 fps for both SWC and SWCHP. It is “full power” without being unpleasant. I’ve already burned up the 1K SWC and just a little more than 1K left. I recommend it highly. Joe

This goes less than 800fps from a 4"barrel look on the web. that makes it nearly perfect for SD without excess penetration...........

I try not to shoot more than couple bad guys a week. I hate the paper work. Even at that how many SD type situations are going to involve the perp wearing body armor? Over Penetration? you are talking life and death situation. I would think for most buying a box of some kind of premium SD ammo would take care of 99% of most SD issues.

Good grief. 150 gr wadcutters at 800 FPS will work as well as most anything. That is what ol ugly M-10 is loaded with. Not a load for police in my opinion...but for home defense etc...good to go...especially after the shotgun. The 45 is loaded with Rem GS hps, the 9mm Sig has Black Talons. Because they are reliable

Some are eaten up with the gunfighting fixation. Their minds go uncontrollably far beyond what a normal and reasonable person would prepare for. A person might be just as fearful of the irrational attitudes and potentially bad judgement of such people as they would be of an armed criminal.

Hello to all. I live in NJ where we are not allowed to use hollow point rounds for self defense.

I had no idea, I knew it was a communist state and had over the top gun laws, but had no idea they also dictate what ammo you can use.

Ok lets see here mister gun owner, under our strict gun laws if you do qualify, you cant have defensive ammo? That's sick!

When limited to solid bullets in 38 Special, I'd say a 158 grain lead semi-wadcutter would be a better choice than the old round nose lead bullet. No need for +P with solid bullets as there is no possibility of expansion and penetration is usually not an issue. Most fixed sight 38 Special revolvers have sights that are regulated for bullseye hits at 25 yards with 158 grain standard pressure ammo.
Correct.... In a role like this, the largest flat point you can find without using a wadcutter is still the best balance of performance and reliability

I can use
Hornady Critical Defense Ammo 38 Special 110gr Flex Tip if I want to. I guess that little bit of polymer makes it OK.
For now I am going to practice and load her with Magtech 148 gr Wad Cutters.

IMO you can use the Hornady ammo because the law makers don't know what they are seeing. They don't see the scary hole in the front of the ammo so it must be OK.

This law like many others concerning guns and ammo are misguided at most and just plane nonsense at the worst. Unfortunately most people making the gun/ammo laws don't really know anything about the subject.

No, but they are sure they are far smarter than you and know what is best for you. After all, they are politicans and must be smart to get elected.

This morning I was confronted by an aggresive splatter target like the one pictured. After repeated warnings the target would not leave the area and I had no choice but to fire upon it with 6 rounds of Magtech 148 grain wad cutters. I was able to halt its advance but the rounds did seem to over penetrate and end up in the berm behind the DOA target.
