I have a 637 w/lock and am looking at picking up a 442 w/o lock. Can anyone share a comparison of the durability of the 442 vs the 637?

Related question: How does the finish on 442 compare to that of a blued steel Model 36? Is the frame of the 442 anodized or "painted"? If I buy one it will be carried in an "inside the pocket" holster.

442

I've had a little 442 for a long time and as a utility weapon the finish has held up great. I don't baby the little revolver either even with the CT grip. It's kept in an inexpensive IWB DH holster and used for everything from a car gun, CCW, plinker and HD and as you can imagin, it's handled quite a bit. I'm satisfied with it just as I am with the finish on my S&W's.

S&W 442

The 442 I carry has held up quite well. It is the model with the lock. FYI, I asked a S&W rep about the finish on the cylinder, and was told (as I suspected) that the cylinder was not blued, but had the same "ion bond" ( I may have the name a bit off) finish used on the 340 M&P. Looking at my 442, I suspect the barrel likewise is not blued (i.e., black oxide) but has the same finish as the cylinder. I understand this is a very durable finish. I like my 442 a lot.

Judging from the used guns I have seen, I think that the dark finish of the 442 my actually be more durable than the 642 frame's finish. Others my disagree. I agree that any wear on the dark finish would show up to a greater degree.

The finish on my 340PD has held up FAR better than any blued gun. In fact, the frame looks better than most used Airweights with the clearcoat finish.
