5906 reassembly problem

I just bought a 5906. Filed stripped it for the first time to clean it. When I reassembled it I somehow got the slide jammed. It will move neither forward and backward. Any suggestion of what I may have done or how to get it undone?

Had the same thing happen yesterday,the guide rod got out of position and gave it a wack on the sight end with the hammer handle.

Hey DT. I have had this happen on couple 3rd gens myself. Before we give you advice, I really need to see what has happened. I have to concur with T-Bird, any chance we can see what is going on? Also, whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to push the slide toward the rear as you may inadvertently damage the tabs on the frame near the hammer.

I would guess the Sear Release Lever didn't get pushed down all the way. It's the shortest and sometimes does't get down enough to clear the slide.


I would suggest, like winddummy, some gentle tapping with a rubber mallet on the rear of the slide to take it off, then use a small punch to make sure the Sear Release Lever is down when installing the slide.

Every Gunsmith I have seen, fixed that problem agrees.. give the slide a GOOD rap with a soft faced hammer.. on the REAR of the slide.. over a soft folded towel..
