Friends.....lend me your 2 cents for a real first world problem. I finally came across one of my top two bucket list guns. A clean 617 no dash 6" in a local shop, finger groove grips, no box. This thing hit all my buttons until I held it up to aim, my trigger finger slid on the trigger. Huh... this doesn't feel right. Looked and some rube mirror polished the trigger. Hammer is untouched. This thing locked up beautiful. In my eyes it was like drawing a mustache on the Mona Lisa...I was put off by it. I walked away at $749.00 plus 6% sales tax like a kid who lost his only baseball.

Am I a fool?? Should I let this bother me so much? Ball park guess for having this rectified? My understanding wife told me to get it but I said I wouldn't be happy with and should keep waiting.

I'm pretty sure a smooth trigger was offered on the Model 617.

Hold out for what you really want. There's lots of Model 617's out there, and that wasn't exactly a "fire sale" price. M617 prices were going to the moon a few years ago, but I think they've actually come down some in the last year.

PRICES OF THE 617s MAY HAVE INDEED COME DOWN, BECAUSE OF THE SCARCITY OF QUALITY .22LR AMMO......

MY PREFERRED AMMO--CCI MINI MAG IN 40GR SOLID--HAS BEEN NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ON STORE SHELVES FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PURCHASE IT ON GUN BROKER, BUT ITS AT HIGHLY INFLATED PRICES. I BUY IT, BECAUSE IT APPEARS THAT ITS THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN......

It sounds as though the previous owner wanted to do mostly DA shooting, for which many prefer a smooth trigger face. The trigger is (fairly) easily replaced with a readily available part. You didn't say the shop's price was "firm". so I would not feel guilty about offering $649 since it is not original and seeing what happens; the difference should get you an original trigger installed. Good luck in your decision.

The polished trigger wouldn't bother me as much as the price
I have purchased three 617's in the last few years
IMO $750 is top dollar for a 6"
They all tend to be in very nice condition
People who buy a 617 generally take good care of it

If the 617 is a bucket list gun, buy or trade into it. My thoughts are the shop is asking high retail. More time and gas used to continue your search for what you now have in hand. Swapping out the trigger is not a big deal.

If you are going to pass on it, let me know where it's at I'll pay 750 for it and be tickled to death. 750 is a stone cold steal , I suggest you buy it, since you found the bargain I didn't. But feel free to put me in second in line in the event you pass.

I have a 617 no dash 6 inch that I bought new. It has a smooth trigger. It'.s the trigger it was born with Buy it you will be happy.

My 617-6 has a smooth trigger as well. The smooth trigger does not bother me at all.

Trigger pull -- I did some polishing on the internals and put in a 13# rebound spring. This is currently my favorite shooter. Given how light and smooth the trigger pull is now (was darn good right out of the box) I do not think a non-smooth trigger would make any difference to me.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I slept on my post and still feel the same.

Let me clarify that while I agree with Smith putting a smooth trigger on them, this was mirror polished and did not match the trigger's "mat" finish. Are you saying that this would also be correct to the gun? A super shiny trigger against the rest being mat?

I have a 6" Model 617 with wide TH and TT and a 4" with smooth combat trigger and semi target hammer,
The smooth combat trigger is way better.
You can use scotch brite on the polished trigger face to make it dull if you are buying it as a collectible and want it to be original in appearance, otherwise just shoot it and your finger acids will likely dull it in time.

IMO $750 is a very fair price for a six inch 617 no dash with original FG combat stocks as they bump its value by $150, Imagine if you saw that same gun with rubber grips for $600 .

Only bad news here is that once you get the 6" Model 617 you will want a 4" to match, and then a 17-6 in both lengths to round it off, then a 17-5 in both lengths and then a 17-4 and an 18-4 or perhaps an Ashland 617.... See where this is headed ?

Where I shop 617 no dash guns with their original combat stocks are in short supply and I wouldn't expect to buy one for $750. If this is really a bucket list item you shouldn't pass on it. I have one in 4 inch and I can assure you it would take considerably more than $750 to get it away from me. Triggers are easily replaced if the one on it bothers you. Good luck.

As long as this post has run , odds are it's long gone unless the shop is located in the sticks and only opens two days a week every other month.

The gun is almost a steal at that price. You'll find plenty of guns with the lock and rubber grips in that price range, but pre-lock, forged parts and combat grips bring a significant premium.

I'm pretty sure fellow forum members are searching shops around Beaverdam right now for that gun.

My 6" 617 no-dash came with a target trigger and hammer while my 4" came with combat parts. I prefer the target items so I installed them in the 4" gun.

I also replaced the 4" gun's rear sight with a Millett and have since put one on the 6" as well. I honestly don't think I would take $750 for either of mine.

This post for some reason makes me smile no matter how many times I read it...

617 no dash

Learned something else about this particular gun today, that it was supposedly one of a matched set with a 686. The 686 sold rather quickly and this 617 has been lamenting in the shop for 4-5 months now because "Nobody really understands what it is" per the proprietor. Will the serial number match it up to the matched pair run of 617/686's if I get it?

Edit- looks like the 200 matched set would have scroll work on the barrel. I dont recall this gun having that. I will check and report back...

Reporting back in on this particular 617. I went back to the shop after work to lay eyes on it. Grips are bookend matched and stamped Nov 1991. No way it could be part of the 200 matched 617/686 sets. No way All the etching was cleaned off, unless you can prove otherwise with the serial number.

There is what looks to be a crosshatch or x between the serial number and model number. Any ideas on that?

We talked about it and settled on $675.00 plus tax, no box. Looks like I will do my best to live with the trigger for now. If any one has one not polished they would like to get rid of, please let me know.
