I have a 686 with a six inch barrel and a 681 with a four inch barrel. I am considering getting into a .41 magnum with a model 657 and a six inch barrel. Have found several on gun broker. I reload so I can create a mild load for target practice. I am asking for opinions on the 657 in comparison to the 686.

The 41 mag is a bit snappier than the 686, but the weight is generally the same for similar barrel lengths. Maybe a bit heavier for a N frame compared to L frame, but not a whole lot.

I have a bunch of 41 mags and they are great if you reload...commercial ammo can be expensive when you can find it.

Good luck with your new toy.

i'm a big fan of the 41 mag.i have them in 3",4"6"& 7.5" all shoot great...i also reload which really helps a lot...i carry the 3"657 as my concealed carry

I've never shot the .41 but I've had several N frames and several K/L frames and I think the biggest issue you may run into will be the transitioning to the larger frame size. My father for instance, a man of average size who has been shooting much longer than I have been alive, handles the K/L frames just fine with considerable accuracy. The N frame for him is a much different story. It does not ride right in his hand and he is simply not able to shoot it as well as the smaller frames. I'm not sure what else you shoot or if you have any experience with the N frame but it may be something to consider.
