I recently picked up a late-model 6906 and noticed these numbers on the frame/slide/barrel. My '91 vintage 6906 (carried as a rookie as an off-duty companion to my 5946 duty gun) didn't have these...I did an image search looking at later models and noticed some had these numbers while others didn't. The ones I saw with them had either an A or a C letter prefix.
Are these assembly numbers similar to revolvers to keep parts together on the assembly line, or some type of agency inventory number as I saw suggested elsewhere? I've been in LE for 30 years, and all firearms I've ever been issued were inventoried by their serial # and not a separate number applied elsewhere.
Thanks for any info!
