One of the two shops I buy most of my guns from had 6946 listed for sale. The listing went up just as they closed last night.

The listing said gun, box, 1 pre ban magazine.

After breakfast this morning, I headed up to the shop. Being a holiday weekend it wasn't all that busy. One of the other things this shop does is allow customers to do the 4473 on line.

The gun was still there, apparently TTSH slept in this morning! ;)

The store owner knew which gun I was talking about and grabbed it right out of the case.

As you can see from my poor pictures below, it looks almost ANIB. I think it saw some range time, but was not carried.

It was clean as a whistle inside. All it will need is a clean, lube, and new recoil spring. Then it will be range ready.

I told the sales guy that the owner sent over that I'd take it. He went out back to get the box which is when I got the surprise. The surprise being a second 12 round magazine that apparently whoever took the gun in missed. This one doesn't look like it's ever seen a round.

All the requisite paperwork being done, it's now mine.

Price out the door was $320.00 including tax.

Here are a couple of pictures per the informal forum rules.

WOW!!!!!!!

That is as clean as clean gets! :D

I hereby declare this the Bargain of the Year 3rd Gen-wise. :D

Hopefully, you will hate it and want to sell it soon to your poor old friend, TTSH. :D

Congratulations GaryS!!!!!! :)

WOW!!!
STOLE IT!
All those hours of watching Carl's used gun listings like a hawk occasionally pay off bigtime for GaryS. :)

This was one of those times. :D

Poor old TTSH didn't have a snowball's chance in Hell of seeing and snagging that gun before GaryS. :p

Wow is right, you bought yourself a beauty! It does look new, I'm jealous. It does pay to keep an eye on listings. Great going, I'm sure you're going to love your newest acquisition. :

I thought we've been led to believe that guns in gun shops in Massachusetts are somewhat higher than the average market... here is one with two pre-ban magazines and in that kind of shape for that price?

From a gun store?

Seems shockingly low. Great snag!

Yes, that's why I flattened the tires on TTSH's car. :D

Actually, I gave him a heads up via PM last night about it. He gave me his blessing. Notice, I didn't give Jeppo a heads up about it. It's bad enough he vacuums up every 3rd Gen in NC. ;)

I was very surprised at the price when I saw the listing and even more surprised when I had the gun in my hand. There was no hesitation on my part at all.

That scarce gun in that condition for that price is unheard of in Massachusetts (both of mine had to be imported in for mucho more money). In my mind, it was a huge pricing mistake... which can occasionally happen and GaryS is ready to spring like a cheetah on it when it happens. I swear he has an RSS feed direct to his smartphone for the listing updates for two major Boston area shops. This is the occasional outstanding result of that diligence. :)

Little does GaryS know, but I keep a compressor and tire patch kit in my car. :) And I was prepared to "borrow" a neighbors car if need be. ;) But he found it fair and square and I'd already bought 3 guns in August plus a case of ammo, so I am broke for the foreseeable future.

And yes it was smart not to alert the Jeppo. :p At least the gun is staying in Massachusetts. :) Perhaps I'll have another shot at it... someday. :D

Notice that I didn't ask "Did I get a good price on this?", because I know that I got a smoking hot deal on an almost ANIB. That it's a unicorn in this state is just that much better.

I think this one would pass the TTSH test for a near perfect 3rd Gen.

Sadly they leave too much on the site after its been sold only to disappoint people...
So true. :( Oh, the stories of wasted time and gasoline I could tell you. :( Call first and reserve it (if it is still there) or expect disappointment. :o

6946 is my edc. I bought mine for cheap when Gander MTN was closing. Mine was issued by a PD and shows holster wear but still a great gun... no where as pretty as yours!

This the one time I went out on a limb and didn't call first. I took a gamble that it being a holiday weekend, the shop wouldn't be full.

It wasn't. When I walked in there were about 8 customers and 8 employees. I didn't have to take number from the machine and I'd done my 4473 on line the night before.

I was in and out in about a half hour.

You mean I had a chance to beat you after all by calling in?  :D Oh man!!! :p

Of course, I would have had to use a false name, 'cause if you had arrived there and they told you it was held by a caller, you could have just said "Oh, that's me" and used my name and said "yeah, my idiot brother-in-law called in for me... sorry for the confusion"! :p

I would have had to use a false name: Mister Jeppo! :D :D :D

That would be a straw reservation!

Yes, I'm kidding! ;)
LOL!!!!! :D

GaryS has beat me to outstanding deals so many times that this dealer would have figured out my devious plot and sold it to GaryS anyway. :p There was no winning on this one. GaryS beat me fair and square. I just have to be more diligent. Checking the listings 3 or 4 times a week doesn't cut it. :o You need to practically live on that website like GaryS does... or the really good stuff comes in and goes out before you even see it. :(

3 or 4 times a WEEK?!

I hit that site that many times an hour!

Well, not that many, but usually an hour or so after they open, after lunch time, and just after they close.

Lot's of people come in starting at lunch time and do deals.

Your prize is still for sale according to that website. :) I think I'll call on Tuesday and try to buy it. :D That 5946 that sold last week is still there too. ;)

So it's not about how often you check it... it's about knowing when it has changed. That's why I still suspect that you have an RSS feed to your smartphone... so you can monitor it 24/7. :) You always seem to know about it 30 seconds after it has been updated.

BTW, I meant to ask you to check out the two 945-1 pistols that have been there for a while. Team member Sevens says I should check them out, but I haven't been able to get up there lately. I did notice that another local shop has a very nice one for... hold your breath... $2,000.00.   That would suggest that the ones Carl has may be pretty good deals. :)

945's?

I've been searching high and low for months. There's one in my area that's more than $2,100 OTD with a brown plastic box. :(

Bought one myself last week

I found a well-used 6946 myself last week at my favorite LGS. Only one magazine but I have another that fits it.

Shows plenty of holster wear but functions 100% with both mags. Being a revolver guy I like the DAO and somewhat heavy trigger. I think it's safer.

$272.08 after all taxes and fees.

I think this is one of those things like wine for poor old TTSH. :o Because I can't tell the really good stuff from a lot of the cheap stuff, I'm perfectly happy with much of the cheap stuff. :) To go a step further... what I don't know, I don't miss.

Because there is no place I can go to test shoot a 945-1, I don't know what I am missing.

In the world of 1911s, I know that there can be a BIG difference between guns. I've shot the good, the bad and the ugly. I've even shot the very-good-to-excellent a few times. :) Just my semi-uneducated guess, but I'd have to believe that the 945-1 must rank up there with the very best 1911s given the price tags I'm seeing.

Would one make sense in my collection? That's an awful lot of money for an old man like me. :o But I was prepared to swallow hard and spend up to $2,100 for that Python that I lost. Is the 945-1 in the same class? Maybe so. I'm just not smart enough to know. :(

About the PC 945's, I've only handled two, both no dashes. It was the slide to frame fit that left me stupefied. I'm sure the seriously high-end 1911's from the custom and semi-custom shops have similar fit and finish but I've never handed one of those.

I hear stories that a 945 will equal if not out-shoot anything at virtually any price. It seems that, even at what we believe are crazy high prices, they're a comparative bargain.

Heads up! I was browsing ebay today.
There is one 69 series stainless mag for sale and 10 of the blued mags. All are S&W factory mags. $35 each
Hard to find mags.
